Forums - Gaming - What's the most overrated game ever in your opinion?

So can we just agree that Zelda games are NOT rpgs or pseudo rpgs. Except the newest one maybe. You don't have to grind in order to become stronger, which you do in rpgs.

On a side note: the german wikipedia says Zelda games are Action Adventures, no mention of the word rpg at all.

Zelda is the definition of an adventure game. People mistake it for an rpg because it has a vast world with different races and all that stuff.

My answer for this will likely be Breath of the Wild for a loooong time. Won't explain my reasonings again because I don't want to sound like a broken record, but I just really wish Nintendo realizes that this game isn't perfect and that there are tons of things that need to be fixed for the next one. The countless prizes it has won by now makes me think that's not going to be the case though, sadly.

I'm Zelda fan, and while I find BotW fairly enjoyable, it has so much problems that I rate it bellow any other 3D Zelda (except MM, which I don't rate at all, since I've dropped it after day or two due to annoying time mechanisms) - 3.5 out of 5 stars (though it would be more of 7.5/10 when translated to that scale).

At this point I'm only counting on Anouma being dickhead (as per usual) and going against what most people want (more of BotW) and actually changing formula again quite a bit - cause this one was wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle.

The Sims.

the hilarious irony of this is that Final Fantasy VII is one of my all time favorite games...and I still feel it's overrated.

At this point it is cliche to say that Final Fantasy VII is overrated.  On every gaming message forum I've ever been on, the number of people who say FF VII is overrated has always far outnumbered apologists for the game.  This even includes people like yourself who authentically like the game and still feel it is overrated.  The question I've been asking is, "Where are all of the people overrating it?"

About 15 or so years ago, you would always have a couple of guys on a forum with handles like Sephiroth69z or IAMCLOUDSTRIFE!!!11111.  Then everyone else, even fans of the game, would think, "Man these guys are really over selling it."  The result is that tons of people think the game is overrated while a tiny, and vocal, minority are actually overrating it.

I dunno, I defend it because I do think it's a great game, and I'm replaying it and still enjoying it, but it's not the best game ever. The graphics are pretty ugly, the gameplay is super simplistic, Sephiroth is trying WAY too hard to be cool, and there are a lot of problems with the story concerning the two main characters (Cloud and Sephiroth).

That said, the rest of the storytelling and writing is well above average. It was a game way ahead of its time in many respects, and I have to commend it for that. But like I said, it gets a lot of undue praise for simply being the first of its kind in many respects, same as Ocarina of Time.

And as an aside, can we either change the title of the thread or clarify what 'overrated' means? The reality is that a lot of people here are spouting nonsense, where they are treating this not as a thread about overrated games, but are treating it as a thread about popular games they dislike.

Example, overrated game: Halo.
Example, popular game I don't like: Horizon: Zero Dawn

The difference is that Halo is a mediocre game that gets praise, while Horizon: Zero Dawn is a game that truly does deserve all its praise but I just couldn't get into. Tried playing it a half dozen times and I didn't personally get into it, but could barely think of any REAL flaws (as in, actual problems with the game, not just personal preferences.)

Almost everyone in this thread is just listing off popular games they don't like without reason or explanation. Maybe I'll actually make a thread about precisely that!

Ocarina of Time.
Also GTA4, Halo 3, Modern Warfare 2, Street Fighter 4, Baldur's Gate, Killzone 2, Destiny, Sonic series, Bayonetta, Heavy Rain, Fable 2, Burnout Paradise etc

What scale do people apply who call Ocarina of Time overrated? Do you compare it to today's Zelda games?

Because back then when the game came out, there was nothing that came even close to being as good as OoT...
