Forums - Sony - What is Sony's biggest Mistake?

the vita was terribly handeld nobody disagrees it was handled worse than the PS3 post launch for sure. the thing is I doubt they lost 1% of the money on vita that they did on PS3

Why do people keep saying Sony sold Spyro and Crash when they never owned them in the first place?

anyway their biggest mistake would probably be the PS3 Launch.

It has an absolutely abysmal launch. That said, it did eventually best 360 in hardware sales despite:

1. Having a garbage launch.

2. Coming out a year later.

3. Not having as much software sold.

4. 360 having many multiple-unit buyers in its userbase due to RRoD.

The main factors that returned a bit of edge to PS3 was the inclusion of a Blu-ray Driver and free online. When compared to Vita, the PS3 was a shining success.

If you are willing to forget that the PS3 nearly bankrupted the Playstation brand then sure it did fantastic. The PS3 litteraly burned all the profits made by the PS1 and PS2. Sure Vita didn't sell much, but it didn't cost Sony much either.

Can I get a source for this? I understand the PS3 was troubled at the start but that sounds insane.

only thing I really always dislike it showing games more then 2 years in advance, apart from that they did a pretty bang on job on most things with the PS4. On the PSP, PSvita and PS3 there where terrible mistakes obviously.

The Cell processor. Over all it didn't add much of an advantage over a year older 360 and made ports tricky even today with backward compatibility. If the PS3 was essentially a 360 inside and launched closer in date and price they would likely have been far more competitive early on and made a profit on a system.

Controversial one is not putting online play behind a paywall from day one. Stinks for gamers, but PS+ has been huge for the stability and growth of their gaming division.

Cell was a lot stronger than PPC on X360, problem was the weaker graphic card...

And PS+ even if you put as controversial, when it was just games gifted on subscription had only about 2M subs, now that it's necessary for MP have it around 30-35M... and at least it only blocked MP gaming instead of all internet usage as done in X360.

Imagine it's price if it had a comparable graphics card.  $800 at launch?

My point was it didn't give Sony an advantage in the market putting so much into the Cell. They realized this and went more standard components for PS4 which is raking in money.

Yes, I agree, and that's my point. If they made online play part of PS+ back then would have had billions more in revenue to offset losses.

This gives a good insight in the total net losses of Playstation from 2000 to 2011. They actually ended on a net loss.

As you can see shot really hit the fan when the PS3 launched. It took Sony more than half a decade to turn the massive losses the PS brand suffered back to a small profit. Yet at the end of 2011 it was not even near 2004 levels. So the PS3 made a nett loss big enough to vaporise the profit of the most succesfull console ever made.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Some people still thinking Sony owned Crash & Spyro...

they didn't own them. but they could have easily bought them back in the 90s or the early 2000s.
