Forums - Sales - Sales tidbit: Tom Clancy franchise has sold 52 million

There are occasionally threads about top-selling franchise lists, which are difficult to put together.

Well, for the next person who tries to do it, you can put the Tom Clancy franchise down for 50 million units and then some. As far as I can tell, there are less than 15 videogame franchises in history to sell 50 million units.

The Tom Clancy series has gotten to the mark through a huge amount of consistently selling titles instead of fewer, mega-selling games like Gran Turismo and the Legend of Zelda. The top selling Tom Clancy game in the VGC database is the XBox version of the original Splinter Cell, with less than 3 million sold (and another~2.5M for the PS2 version), but the database lists over 65 different games, most with no data.

Great, Splinter Cell has always been one of my favorites.

This would be a great thing if it was across around 10 titles but the sheer amount of games in the franchise makes it a meh milestone.

Mil. Sellers:

Wii:      25 titles       101.4 mil total    avg 4 mil per title

PS3:     14 titles      28.6 mil total    avg ~2 mil per title

360:     41 titles      89.8 mil total   avg  >2 mil per title

Well, there's been a lot of franchises to have a ton of entries. Most can't keep putting every main entry in multiple subseries across the million-seller mark, though.

Aye, despite the large number of titles in the franchise, Clancy games seem to sell a consistent million each. Which is a pretty nice guarantee.

Thats cool!

but Tom Clancy isn't the franchise.

the franchises are: Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, plus HAWX and Endwar when they come out. plus any I forgot.

The Tom Clancy name is being used as intellectual property; as a brand. And so I think "Tom Clancy franchise" is a fair way to put it.

^^

yeah i know what you mean. thats fair to say.

I'm just thinking it would be more fair to say the Rainbow Six franchise has sold 10 million (or whatever it would be).

well tom clany ip pretty much means intense futuristic war games so i think it should count as one franchise. big accomplishment fore them and while there have been a lot of title just about all of them broke 1 million and a lot broke 2 million if u count multiplatforms

Yeah, Tom Clancy is really a franchise, just like with Mario. Well done Tom Clancy!
