Forums - Gaming - PS3 is "inviting trouble" with mod support - Microsoft XNA boss

Chris Satchell, XNA group manager at Microsoft, has said that companies like Sony, Nintendo and Apple are "inviting trouble" if they don't have XNA-style security measures in place to protect against malicious user-generated content.

"I think there's a potential risk on any platform where you're allowing...where you're running in what we call native mode, where you're writing straight to the metal, not a sandbox layer like XNA, and then that runs a script engine and you let people do that in that script engine," Satchell told Eurogamer in an interview published today.

"Any platform that let's you do that, and doesn't have the right security measures in place - whether it's Sony, whether it's Nintendo, whether it's Apple, whether it's anyone - you're inviting trouble, because sooner or later someone will want to prove they can do it," he added.

Satchell was responding to a question about whether the peer-review system used to help weed out inappropriate content in XNA community games could be put to other use. He admits it could be, but obviously mod support isn't on the immediate agenda.

The XNA group's boss also talked about the possibility of XNA community games being allowed to use Achievements, saying that Microsoft will "need to see how the community works" before making a decision.

I think it's quite funny how three companies are wrong (who all just happen to be Microsoft's main rivals), and Microsoft is right.

Well to be fair the Xbox was the victim of a devastating software exploit from a third party game so they're likely more paranoid now about such things.  Imagine that instead of a soft mod the authors of the code had made it to brick the console and it could be downloaded directly to the console over the Internet.  That's what Microsoft is afraid of.

I think it's funny that people are so used to disparaging Microsoft that they ignore intelligent points such as insulating the system from user content that could risk permanently damaging it.

Though... I think it would be somewhat interesting to see a PS3/Wii virus or two in the wild.

If the OS gets virused up....you could always, you know, get a new HDD....at least for the PS3

What if instead of a virus it's code that causes a firmware update that bricks the console?

Or a firmware update which allows (un)signed code to be booted from the hardrive, essentially providing a low cost way to pirate games on the PS3?

well....if you get a new HDD, the system would get set back to 1.0.0, right?

So, Unreal 3 with mods for the 360 or not? I think the answer is above.

Plus, there is nothing like being in full control of your customers.

here is the beauty of the PS3, the CELL will just reformat the HDD and all you have to do is redownload/install your games.  Gasp, Sony has a better system. *SHOCK!*
