 That's not racist, using the first 3 letters of a cultural race doesn't qualify as racism, alot of people do the same thing, like calling Swedish people "sweedes" and Australian's "Aussies", English people "Brits"

He isn't kidding. During WWII, Jap was a derogatory term used for the Japanese. I would not a call Japanese person a Jap. Do so at your own peril, don't be surprised if they get pissed and kick your ass.
