18. Thor: The Dark World - 5/10

Notes:

- I upped my initial rating of Civil War from a 9 to 10. Honestly, the only reason I had it as a 9 was because I felt that only one movie in the MCU could have a 10 rating. After thinking more on Civil War and my dumb restriction, I knew it was a 10 for me.

- I also upped my Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 rating from 8 to 9 and from 5th to 3rd in my rankings. The more I think of Vol. 2, the more I like what it did. I remember leaving the theater opening weekend enjoying it, but slightly disappointed. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it on my second rewatch this time, but couldn't reconcile with the fact that I might have enjoyed it even more than the first, which wasn't as great during its second rewatch, so I ranked it lower than the first GOTG. However, since I've watched it, I can't stop thinking of it and just all the emotions it brings out. I loved all character development we see, the humour is fantastic and Ego is much better villain than Ronan.

- Finally, moved Iron Man 3 above Iron Man 2 after thinking it over. I still hate how they handled the Mandarin and Pepper in the final act, but I really like Tony's story more in Iron Man 3 than I did in 2.

Awesome, thanks for sharing!

I will update those scores :)

I just watched Black Panther a second time (yeah, it's still in theatres here) and I loved it! I mean, I'm not changing my scores on it, it's still an 8, but an 8 on the Marvel Scale is still a 9.3 on the worldwide scale (I don't give 9's that often, so that still speaks volumes).

Hell, my roommate (who tends to be a little resistant to anything that might criticize white males) loved it, even! And he's an edgy type who would hate it for 'stoking the flames'. So yeah, that says a lot. The only problem was that this dude sat next to me smelling of pizza grease and Cheeto dust. Disgusting, to say the least.

But with that said, the theatre was packed! 10th weekend and there were maybe 6 or 7 seats not filled! Sure, it wasn't the largest of theatres, maybe a few hundred seats, but still! You know a movie is great when you can say that it's still packing seats 10 weekends later.

Also, here's my final pre-Infinity War rankings:

10/10:
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Captain America: Civil War
The Avengers

9/10:
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2
Thor: Ragnarok
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Guardians of the Galaxy

8/10:
Black Panther
Doctor Strange
Spider-Man: Homecoming

7/10:
Captain America: The First Avenger

6/10:
Iron Man 3
Iron Man
Iron Man 2

5/10:
Thor: The Dark World
Ant-Man
Thor

4/10:

3/10:

2/10:
The Incredible Hulk

1/10:

0/10:

So yeah! Great stuff! HAs been quite the journey, and my body is ready! I still to this day don't understand why Age of Ultron is considered one of the weaker films, I felt it had a great story, a great villain, a great character dynamic, and a lot of plot and some amazing action. Does it digress for side plots? yes. Are there hanging threads? yes. But I don't see that as a negative given the nature of the MCU. It's a sprawling world with dozens of characters all interwoven, there is going to be the occasional dangling plot thread. I still think it was one of the best stories, some of the best action, and arguably the best overall character work in the entire franchise.

And it was a lot of fun.

Either way, this has been quite the journey.

Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.2: 8/10
I'm switching between 8 and 9 for this movie. It could go either way. Regardless, this is one of the best movies of the MCU. The movie looks gorgeous. My favorite shot is Ego's spaceship first entering his planet and showing the overall look of it in space. All the spaceship scenes use such an energetic way of movement to show space fights and it feels fast and exciting. All the villains work wonderfully in their roles. Ayesha and her minions are pathetic and incompetent and make for great humor. Same thing for Taserface and his goons. Ego does have a pretty conventional objective, but that's offset by the film trying to establish how much of a sociopath he has and the overall emotional effect he has on Peter. All these characters have tragic backgrounds and try to act cold and distant to hide it. Its somewhat cliché, but the acting and the dialogue between the different characters makes it work. Nebula, for instance, is described to have been a practical machine for Thanos to control as much as he wants by replacing different parts of her body. This movie can get really dark, but it uses humor that lands most of the time and I found it to be really funny. The acting was really impressive. A standout scene to me was Peter yelling at his dead for leaving his mother. You can see Ego successfully coaxing his son to accomplish his objective by putting on a façade and both of the actors do really well in the scene. The movie is nicely paced, even though I thought some of the editing was questionable. The music (both original and licensed) is well done and fits the different scenes perfectly. The movie is visually interesting and uses a lot of different angles to show different viewpoints. I liked the use of the character shadows against the colorful backgrounds. My list of complaints is really short. It primarily comes down to the final battle being incredibly CGI heavy and looking incredibly artificial. When I saw it in the theatres, it actually gave me a headache. It wasn't too bad watching it again, but it was somewhat annoying. Also, the blue material that spawns on the planet looks a bit fake. The extras that are in the scene on Earth are also stupid and just stand around to observe the goo after running from it previously. Other than that and some other nitpicks, this movie is really great.

I'm gonna rewatch Spider-Man for a third time and have my thoughts up tonight.

Wow people here really like Guardians of the Galaxy 2, I thought it was a massive step down.

Okay! Crunch time. I’m looking forward to the Spider-Man: Homecoming rewatch as (is my system) it takes me at least two viewings to determine how I feel about any given film. I remember being ambivalent to the first viewing. It’s not that the film was bad, I just had no strong feelings either positive or negative. Spider-Man is my favorite Marvel superhero and the one I have read the most source material for, so the on screen potrayal never feels quite right. I liked the first two Raimi films and I really the first Amazing Spider-Man as that felt closest to the spirit of the comics. We’ll see how this one turns out on a second viewing. See you on the other side!
