Super Mario Odyssey Review

In terms of originality, it is getting increasingly difficult for Nintendo to make unique Mario experiences. Often, they have to take a new idea and combine it with concepts of the past. Never have they, in this reviewer’s opinion, combined such a large amount of good qualities of their past games into one single Mario game. I’ve said before that Odyssey isn’t amazing because of one awesome feature, but rather because it doesn’t have any bad features. Looking in the past, Mario 64 had a horrible camera (and controller, for that matter), Sunshine’s whole concept was hated by many, Galaxy 1 and 2 had wii motion (mostly waggle), 3d land and world were too limited in terms of exploration.

Odyssey has none of these problems. It loads quickly; you can pick up right where you left off almost instantly. The game has amazing music for a Mario game. Movement has never been easier or more enjoyable. My wife and I played the ENTIRE game (we are now on bonus moons for “SPOILER” secret worlds) in multiplayer and, unlike 3d world, it wasn’t annoying. Sure, there was some getting used to it, but after about an hour or so of that we were a dynamic duo of Mario and Cappy and it was an absolute blast. The game frequently changes tone, lighting, and art style as you progress from one world to the next, each looking absolutely beautiful in their own right. The story was even the best 3d Mario story experience to date (and the most original), though still not perfection by any means. Overall, this is the most enjoyable Mario experience Nintendo has ever made and one of their most enjoyable games of all time.
