Forums - Gaming - Gears criticised for stereotyping

Everyone who thinks that this is "no big deal" needs to wake up to the real world. There is plenty of racism out there, and all of these little things add up after awhile. Off the top of my head, I can't think of a single game in which black people are portrayed in a positive light. Most games don't even have black characters. The few games I have played with black characters, like Guitar Hero and SSX Tricky, have pretty stereotypical black characters.

Although to be fair, all the characters in those two games are pretty stereotypical.

The pot shouldn't call the kettle black, Mr. "We make Tomb Raider and big-breasted Lara Croft, since that's all women are good for"

What? Raiding tombs?

Lara Croft is not a stereotype at all. Why would the size of her breasts indicate that she is? She may be giving young girls an unrealistic body image, but that is another issue entirely.

OT: The guy definitely has a point. Pretty much every black character in gaming is straight outta Compton. I'm not sure if Gears is a very good example though, as every character in the game is a walking cliche. I think games rely on stereotyping as a way of conveying information about a character quickly, as game narratives aren't usually sufficiently developed to allow for complex characters.

I'd be more worried about games like CoD4 in which you spend the whole time shooting brown people and communists without any political context.

Not true at all.  Off the top of my head, what about in HL2 the black scientist and his daughter that helps out.

I'm totally with him!

How dare those awful game developers make fictional games that don't represent the real world.

Yeah, Eli Vance is a good guy.  Too bad he had to have his brains sucked out by an advisor though...

Never played that game.

One or two exceptions does not make up for the vast majority of games.

His point is that game developers put a lot of time and thought into creating their fictional worlds but rarely think to feature a black protagonist. I think that's true.

Off the top of your head you remember characters from a game made about 8 years ago.  I am just being silly don't mind me.
