I find that the easiest way to make it switch is by looking at the reflection of her foot while you think about it going in the opposite direction and then slowly looking back up at the rest of her

Hahaha, nope sorry try again.
And I agree with Grey Acumen.
That is the method I also use.
Though after awhile you'll be able to intentionally change the direction by yourself without the reflection guide.

Actually the method to why it can change is quite simple. Every single image that makes up that moving gif can be viewed in two completely opposite ways. For example:

Each arm and leg could be the right or left. She could be facing the front or back. Because the next image in the sequence will be able to be viewed in both ways as well, it all depends on how you choose to view it. It's not actually rotating, just sequencing a few dozen images that, like this one, can be viewed in 2 ways.

Edit: BTW, this has nothing to do with your right or left brain.  That's a total myth.

It looks to me to be a 3d character rotating. The silhouette is what causes the illusion.
