They've sold about a million each in Japan counting MGS2: Substance and MGS3: Subsistence.

Sales dropped to 7-8k weekly at one point. It was really bad. |
it looks like that may happen again soon

Sony can't like really demand it
but they must be communicating with Square about it anyhow
and I do believe that at Square they also understand that it's also for them good for the PS3 to succeed

Square cann't take FFXIII to the Wii
also a (downgrade even maybe?) to the 360 would be a less good option
when FFXIII hits somewhere in 2009 in Europe, the PS3 will be leading there and probably accelerating away from the 360
in the US the 360 will still have a lead in 2009,
but the core of those gamers are Xbox gamers and didn't feel the need to play FFX and FFXII anyway
and the PS3 will have a descent userbase
and in Japan
the PS3 userbase is way higher than that of the 360
so the PS3 is clearly the best option for FFXIII, a port later to the 360 if even possible is something else
the Wii is impossible, cause it can't play FFXIII

FFXIII will do very little beyond a big sales spike for the PS3. The series, like all JRPGS, is extremely front loaded and has no legs. People aren't going to buy a system just because a game is on it. They will but it to play the game. You need games with legs for sustained selling power. Games like FFXIII are very nice for a system, but unless there is a very steady stream of them it is not really what the PS3 needs to pull a turn around in Japan.
When Sony took out the BC model PS3 in Japan, sales started to decline very fast. If they would have just left that in, they would be selling on par with the Wii in Japan.
This will only take a moment of your time. *steals your watch*
