FFXIII will do very little beyond a big sales spike for the PS3. The series, like all JRPGS, is extremely front loaded and has no legs. People aren't going to buy a system just because a game is on it. They will but it to play the game. You need games with legs for sustained selling power. Games like FFXIII are very nice for a system, but unless there is a very steady stream of them it is not really what the PS3 needs to pull a turn around in Japan.
It has also been showing some signs of growing in popularity. It is unlikely to break a million sans re-release, but 900k is not unreasonable. The only constraining factor is the much smaller install base which will be alieviated somewhat by the release of the game itself.
