People need to stop arguing that the PS3 is losing (and/or that the Wii is winning) mostly due to price. In the 4 home console generations since 1986, the cheapest console (Dreamcast/Gamecube, Nintendo 64, Genesis, Atari 7800) has never sold best. NEVER. |
Love is whats most important.
No Games, poor online, Bigger machine than the 360. (which we know the Japanese like their machines small). No BC. Sony seemed to have hinged an aweful lot on Metal Gear. (which looks amazing). But do they really have any more killer apps to follow?
I don't think you can say the ps3 is going to improve like the psp, because look at the software for the psp, people are using it for the features like skype and other multimedia aspects and not games. As a home console the ps3 main function is to play games, but in Japan that's more of a group thing and the Wii is the best for that.
I see a lot of ideas in this thread but there's not so many that can be put into practice.
More japanese games, yes, but it's not like Sony has been hiding 20 of them waiting to be released and they can do that whenever they want. The game situation will take a while to improve.
So right now price and sku modifications are the only thing Sony can do to try to improve their sales and they need to find ways to move their fan base from the PS2 to the PS3 ( it's just not gonna be that easy to get those people that bought a Wii to the PS3.)

You need to lay off drugs man.
Microsoft is everything but a philantropic company....
They are a company that takes advantage of a monopolistic situation in the software area to sell some of the software with the highest margins in the industry....
If they had competition, things like Windows office would sell for the half the current price......

Maybe if you don't count the huge ass 360 external power supply and external upgrades. I don't think the 360 has an advantage there.

CrazzyMan said: For answer see c) Yep, I actually expect a little bit more 1st week, maybe 600.000. Absolutely great. But you must agree that with 600.000 software sales the maximum hardware boost is around 150.000. That's not going to make a huge impact when the gap is 3.7 million. So you dismiss this argument in a) and now you use it yourself? You've just proven yourself wrong. Several of these games that made the PS2 successful already appeared on PS3 and did close to nothing. You're mentioning MGS4 in your list (while its predecessors are ranking 22 and 23), while ignoring the numbers 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 18 and 20 on that list? Well done!
I don't say it will do nothing, but look at Yakuza 3, probably a bigger game than anything besides Star Ocean (which isn't even certain to be a PS3 game) sold quite well, but boosted PS3 hardware with only 8000 compared to the week before and that with 12000 silver Yakuza PS3's being sold. I don't expect MH3 to sell like the latest PSP version, but you can't deny that the series has seen a dramatic increase in poularity. You can see that by comparing the PSP games with each other. MH3 will do better than the PS2 games. You forget that since Wii is the leader a lot of games will come. Rumours of Kingdom Hearts and Suikoden might be false, but even then a lot of Japanese support will come to Wii. |
"You're getting to be a top Sony fanboy. I often point to your post when you inferred that the PSP in Japan, and the PS3 in Europe would eventually lead to Sony domination."
Which post? If you talk about the SONYDOMINATION post I think you haven't understood the slight sarcasm (or analogy to 2million Nintendo domination posts
). Besides I have to inform you that this was one of the least useful comments I have read in this forum because its information content was equal to zero. But smalltalk is nice too.
"But if you look at handhelds, you can clearly see that the incentive of graphics can easily be overcome by other incentives. ... I couldn't help but notice that Kyros managed to reply to everyone responding to his post except for me. " Is it because my assessment was so profound that he agrees wholeheartedly with it, even though it stands in utter opposition to his previous view, or is it merely because he can't come up with a solid rebuttal? "
LOL if you insist! I didn't answer you because you are of course correct. Graphics are only one factor and can be overcome by other factors. I mean this can easily be seen by the fact that the Wii which has trounced the competition although it has terrible graphics. Your are also correct that this is even more pronounced in handhelds where battery life and size are two very important factors that do not exist in home consoles.
If you read my posts you will see that I never said anything else. But graphics ARE one very important aspect, even more so in home consoles than in handhelds. All the "graphics don't matter guys" have drunk way too much of Nintendos Kool-aid. So I haven't answered your post because you are tendentially correct and we differ in the precise level of importance of graphics.
If you read what I wrote you will find that I argued that until now the Wii advantages are bigger than the technological disadvantages but that some of these advantages will get way smaller in the next year.
1. Games: The most important factor, Nintendo has already released its biggest titles Sony will start with that in April
2. price: Yes the wii can get cheaper too but in absolute terms the difference will get smaller
