No one has hit on the reason why the PS3 isn't doing well in Japan. I was waiting for someone to do so but I haven't seen unless I missed the post. The PS3 lacks enough casual pick up and play titles. The reason portables and the Wii are doing so well in Japan because they have a significant number a games that can be played in short play sessions. The Japanese don't have the free time that we do and often spend 2 to 3 hours a day on mass transit transportation systems. The 360 has more traditional Japanese centric titles than the PS3 and arguably the Wii and it isn't selling either.
Nintendo said the market in Japan was changing everyone thought they were crazy but the market trends in Japan show that Nintendo was right. Between the more limited free time and the simple fact that the Japanese have been playing the same traditional "hardcore" game genres for the past 20 years have snowballed into the current Japanese market situation.
