Forums - Gaming - Unreal Engine 4 "years away", says Rein

I expect UE4 in 2010. UT4 will be out in 2010 as well.

As for the argument that HD gaming is to costly and to soon due to Sony and Microsoft jumped the gun with advanced hardware, like Sony did with the PS2. Why dont you look towards Crysis. I would basically say that Crysis is a jump past current console offerings.. blame EA before you blame Sony and Microsoft.

You don't have to really "say" that, ssj. It's so blatantly true that the topic is indisputable.

We can't go blaming Epic for raising developer costs when they created an engine that has been graphically surpassed by several PC developers. It wouldn't surprise me one bit to see Left4Dead graphically equal anything done on UE3 and it's using a four year old engine.

that can be argued with too.  The newest version of the Source Engine (Orange Box SKU) is quite a bit more powerful then what HL2: Episode 1 ran on.

PC gaming is better than console gaming. Always.     We are Anonymous, We are Legion    Kick-ass interview   Great Flash Series Here    Anime Ratings     Make and Play Please

Did they update the Source engine? I didn't realize that. Makes sense, though.

Source gets regular updates but they when they also built the engine they made it so it could take insane huge textures that at the time the engine was made no computer could really handle well but they computers could in the coming years.

Because of that it's easy for them to scale textures so they can be run on a wide range of computers or consoles and things will always look good.

At least I think that was the reason things have always looked good in Source, it's been a while since I've fiddled with it and gave it any thought.  >_>

Epic saved HD gaming. Imagine how many less games we would have without middleware engines.

Do you honestly think UE3 is the only licensed next-gen engine? It's simply one of the more popular ones and one of the early ones. If a studio doesn't want to make their own engine there are many other (and in some cases better) options.

And who's really surprised to hear that UE4 is years away?

I don't think it's the only one, but it seems to be one of the only flexible ones, and one of only three I see used for console gaming, with Havok and The Source Engine being the other two. I could be wrong though, so which engines are being used other than UE3, Havok and Source?

Havoc is a physics-only engine and is used in conjuncture with UE3 and pretty much every other engine ever developed.

I know that. That wasn't the point of it's inclusion. It's being heavily used by consoles thus I included it. I just wanted to know if anyone is contracting anything other than those three to help in game development because twestern said UE3 is only one of the more popular ones and said there are better options out there for studios.

Ah, okay. I misunderstood. I know there is use of a few other engines out there but right now, I'm way too lazy to look into it further. I'm sure Twesterm is much more informed about this than I am.

the Cry engine (far cry, crysis)
ue3
source
gamebyro (has full ps3, 360 and wii support)

are the main names for engines known by people

the new ID software tech 5 is being used as well for some - I THINK

as well as several smaller names..

Is the Crytek engine used for anything other than their own games? I wasn't counting proprietary engines like Bethesda's Oblivion engine or Square's White Engine, both of which are obviously multiplatform.
