Epic saved HD gaming. Imagine how many less games we would have without middleware engines.

Do you honestly think UE3 is the only licensed next-gen engine? It's simply one of the more popular ones and one of the early ones. If a studio doesn't want to make their own engine there are many other (and in some cases better) options.

And who's really surprised to hear that UE4 is years away?

I don't think it's the only one, but it seems to be one of the only flexible ones, and one of only three I see used for console gaming, with Havok and The Source Engine being the other two. I could be wrong though, so which engines are being used other than UE3, Havok and Source?

Havoc is a physics-only engine and is used in conjuncture with UE3 and pretty much every other engine ever developed.

I know that. That wasn't the point of it's inclusion. It's being heavily used by consoles thus I included it. I just wanted to know if anyone is contracting anything other than those three to help in game development because twestern said UE3 is only one of the more popular ones and said there are better options out there for studios.
