Forums - Microsoft - Kinect is officially dead

PSCamera wasn't marketed with the whole 'this is the most important thing ever, it will be in all of your games' It was a, hey this is a cool thing that does stuff that you can use as a webcam and to livestream with..

Ooo now the camera you bought years ago already works with our VR so you can buy a VR headset and do your thing.

Think about it, for every PSVR they sell they need a PSCamera as well so they will be around for as long as VR is.

Well, of course. Can't you remember how suddenly 'Kinect' was largely for voice control and a communication device for Scarp? Then slowly but surely it just became a device for Scarp with the occassional appologist talking about how much easier it was to navigate with Kinect. I predicted Kinect was being killed a long long time ago and when they started changing the commands in line with Cortana, I doubled down on that theory. MS will start pushing keyboard and mouse control soon and then we'll find out they've made PC cameras compatible with the X1X. Windows will then be heavily promoted once again. Xbox is no longer a product, it's a service which is why they're doubling down on GAAS.

It's really strange how people 'come along' with something so blindly that it only ever becomes clear to them when it's all done. I got the same thing on another forum. I would predict based on logical steps and 'well chosen' PR statements and people would argue I was wrong. THEN, when it happened, the same people would say 'we all knew it would happen eventually'. It's amazing.

Just wanted to point out that PC cameras work with the Xbone right now!

The Kinect was great idea in theory. The problem is that besides a few games nothing was designed to use the Kinect. Most of the game developers just bypassed it. a few tried a few "extra" things with it that did seem like a nice attempt (thinking dead rising 3, when Kinect would pick up loud noises it could attract the zombies).

Gaming wise it wasn't that great, but you navigating the Xbox it was great. The voice commands worked great usually walk into a the room and you Xbox was ready to go before you even had the controller. But losing the snap feature look a lot of the Kinect's advantage away.

Yeah, I just went and double checked because after I'd written that I seemed to remember reading an article on it. They're 'promote' it more then. They're blurring the line. Games are not now made for the XB consoles, they're made for the PC and then tweaked to run on the XB. This is why we are very unlikely to ever see an XB1 exclusive ever again.

The PS5 Exists.

It was interesting technology, but I never felt it added to gaming the way they initially hoped.

^^^^^Navel...

Oh, you said "Natal."  Sorry.

I have two for Xbox One and one for Xbox 360. Good memories, even when they didn't work right. I'll continue using mine for Xbox One for things like signing in and controlling my devices even though XBO I and XBO X have IR Blasters built in.

One weekend with me and the way I used Kinect would convince anyone that it was a good investment. Getting rid of "snap" cut my usage dramatically, though. I always felt that if XBO X and VR caught on, Kinect 2.0 could be the best interface around.

Did Kinect 2.0 fix the lag? Any slight delay is unacceptable in VR.

Kinect tech is still used in mixed reality headsets, still haven't seen a review how it performs in an actual VR game though. So far reviews say it works good enough but not yet up to hardcore player standards. (Blur when moving your head fast, occasionally loses tracking, moreso with the controllers, not suited for precision work) Kinect lives on, for better or worse..

I have a few Kinect games that require fast, precise movement like Blue Estate, Fruit Ninja, and Kinect Sports and of course I've been a PSVR owner since day one (like you) with at least a couple dozen VR titles in my collection.

I can honestly say that they are probably equally responsive. Not really surprising since both rely on cameras to track movement. Neither are 100% perfect, though. Probably much more flawed compared to a higher end experience like Oculus Rift or something.

Move controlls, kinect, 3d, all sucked.

4k is good because it just has more pixels, win-win and VR has potential but lets not support all the other crap.

The Move controllers and VR go, excuse the pun, hand in hand, for a full VR experience you're better off with a Move controller in each hand, can't say I know how many games actually do so, but I do know a few games do, and from what I've heard it's definitely better to play that way than with a controller. As long as VR is relevant (And developers are still pumping out VR content), the Move controllers will be too, they've basically been given a second chance, lol.

As for the Kinect, well I only had it for the X360, although it wasn't mine anyway, it was my brothers, and honestly it never really impressed me, he had a few games, some worked alright, others just didn't at all, he had this fighting game and half the time it didn't respond to movements... it was funny to watch though, lol.

Sony really needs to release a refined version of the Move. While it's great for people who already owned the controllers in that it reduced the entry cost to PSVR, the Move has a bunch of flaws that need to be addressed.

I'd like to point out that I said a generation ago that Kinect and PSMove were both meh products and would not provide the value motion did for Wii / Nintendo.

So the fact that motion is still a core functionality for Nintendo's hardware while it is now non-existent in other systems demonstrates I was right all along. Thankfully in Nintendo's case, the functionality adapted well and devs are no longer attempting to shoe-horn it into a game where it doesn't make sense. Games like ARMS, ZeldaBOTW, Splatoon2, Just Dance, etc demonstrate its continued value.
