Forums - Microsoft - Kinect is officially dead

But but the Xb1 IS kinect, they make no sense without eachother.... right?

I have two for Xbox One and one for Xbox 360. Good memories, even when they didn't work right. I'll continue using mine for Xbox One for things like signing in and controlling my devices even though XBO I and XBO X have IR Blasters built in.

One weekend with me and the way I used Kinect would convince anyone that it was a good investment. Getting rid of "snap" cut my usage dramatically, though. I always felt that if XBO X and VR caught on, Kinect 2.0 could be the best interface around.

Meanwhile, the PSCamera and MOVES are still being manufactured and sold ...

PSCamera wasn't marketed with the whole 'this is the most important thing ever, it will be in all of your games' It was a, hey this is a cool thing that does stuff that you can use as a webcam and to livestream with..

Ooo now the camera you bought years ago already works with our VR so you can buy a VR headset and do your thing.

Think about it, for every PSVR they sell they need a PSCamera as well so they will be around for as long as VR is.

I honestly thought it already was since like what 3 years ago.

Well, of course. Can't you remember how suddenly 'Kinect' was largely for voice control and a communication device for Scarp? Then slowly but surely it just became a device for Scarp with the occassional appologist talking about how much easier it was to navigate with Kinect. I predicted Kinect was being killed a long long time ago and when they started changing the commands in line with Cortana, I doubled down on that theory. MS will start pushing keyboard and mouse control soon and then we'll find out they've made PC cameras compatible with the X1X. Windows will then be heavily promoted once again. Xbox is no longer a product, it's a service which is why they're doubling down on GAAS.

It's really strange how people 'come along' with something so blindly that it only ever becomes clear to them when it's all done. I got the same thing on another forum. I would predict based on logical steps and 'well chosen' PR statements and people would argue I was wrong. THEN, when it happened, the same people would say 'we all knew it would happen eventually'. It's amazing.

oh okay. My question: Who liked Kinect in the past ?

Would interest me. Who misses it?

I find these camera games entertaining for like the first 5-10min but at the end of the day I rather just sit back and game with a controller, so I wouldn't really miss it.

Good, VR is next.

I know... my English sucks.

The original Kinect was a fad built on promises. It fell off a cliff when a lot of those promises went unfulfilled. Then Microsoft built their next Xbox around Kinect, even without addressing the lack of meaningful content that had killed the first version. That's the amazing part of the situation and it made very little sense.

However, these are all steps in the progression of technology. It's just a matter of technology maturing enough to be a fit for the market place. Elements of Kinect will eventually be a part of base functionality. These misfires are useful.
