Played it yesterday and didn't have an issue. The new UI is actually pretty good and I think it's better than the old one. Haven't played online or transfered anything yet though.

I guess they need microtransactions to recoup the huge development costs of Minecraft

And by development you mean buying it off of mojang then paying third parties to port it for you

As long as people can still play it, I don't think that will matter. And if this new version doesn't get better traction with the press and fans, I fully expect them to change their minds entirely. They're not stupid.
