Forums - Nintendo - First Super Mario Odyssey Review in! (EDGE)

Oh and the first review deal shtick is as far as I can tell a myth. Numerous games published by Nintendo in the past few years have had Edge reviews come in at Embargo or later, irregardless of score.

Neither Splatoon or ARMS got a 10 from EDGE but idk if they got early review code in any of those cases. The reasons for EDGE getting early SMO code were shown perfectly in a shot from a tweet earlier in this thread.

and what was the score for BOTW? If this happens all the time, then I guess its just something I have to get used to. Can you name some Nintendo games that EDGE didnt give a perfect score to that came out much earlier than other reviews?

Not off the top of my head no but the first i heard of it was from their BOTW review. EDGE are extremely well respected though, both in and outside the industry.  That is also the 1st time i've heard someone question their integrity. (Well apart from a few posters here and elsewhere after their BOTW review). I think we can agree that making accusations of a professional, massively respected review site on a forum is silly fanboy stuff. I guess Nintendo chose EDGE for their exclusive 1st review on both games because they know EDGE is the most respected respectors of what is quality out there and Nintendo have enough confidence in the quality of their games to do this.

Ok, so we should only care about what EDGE have to say then? No other review site or publication is worth reading?

Undisclosed quid pro quo between a product producer and a reviewer tofraudulently inflate a score is criminal so no, he accused them of that.

Where does it says that is illegal?

It is illegal to opperate as a supposedly impartial party reviewing or covering a product when you are in fact compensated in some manner for giving it a positive review or promotion and keeping said compensation undisclosed.  That is against the law in most territories.  Here in the States it is classified as a violation of FTC disclosure guidelines.

That's hardly what he said.  By all means read other reviews, there will be scores to choose from well before launch.  Edge just has some pull due to their recognition and situation.

No of course not. I'm sure you have your favourite(s) as to who you trust the most. However, EDGE is probably THE most respected reviews outlet both by gamers and the industry itself. Their opinion is seen of 1 of the most important. So, to question their integrity, especially when you are from a site as piss poor as Forbes, then it really is ludicrous.

So whatever EDGE does should never be questioned? Seems a bit much.

Can you give me an example where the law came down on a review site for this?

I'm just lurking this thread but I have to say it amazes me how you badly you misread and misinterpret everything other posters are saying. I'd only hope this is intentional as it really doesn't make you look good at all.

Like others have said, EDGE is one the most respected of gaming media and have been around for ages. They are one of the few paper magazines to survive the upswing of the internet and are obviously in a very good position in regards to publishers. When EDGE asks Nintendo to review SMO early so they can publish their review on time instead of weeks after launch, it's perfectly understandable why Nintendo chose to comply. Any other major publisher would have done the same, especially when you're confident you've deliverd a quality product.

Of course it gets questioned by individuals (especially by fanboys on forums) but collectively it is massively respected in the industry and for another in the industry to not only question it but to outright accuse it of underhand stuff is extremely crass to say the least!

Not sure if gamers trust it quite so much but collectively i hear lots of good said about it both by gamers and from within the industry.
