Hmm.. Maybe you're right.
Occasionally, I just find myself longing for a better sense of speed in cockpit view. But maybe you're right that in real life we feel the sense of speed through sound and rumble (as in being physically in the car feeling the rumble) and not at all through a shaky view.
I believe you're right regarding VR offering a view with a far better sense of speed. I gotta try it soon.

I did some careful observations today while cycling (my favorite passtime) and I guess you're right too. My bike doesn't have suspension, tires at 80 psi, zero give, saddle is not build for comfort either every bump is felt. When I ride over a rumble strip while staring straight ahead, the horizon does jump in my visual field. So I guess in a race car with stiff suspension and a hard race seat, going 5 times as fast, bit of shakiness in your visual field is quite normal.
Ofcourse without staring straight ahead your brain interprets it as the car or you moving compared to the earth and horizon being the 2 big constants. Which is probably a big reason for sea sickness, messing with the fundamentals of visual processing.
VR gives you a better sense of speed as it makes use of your peripheral vision. Peripheral vision is not good at noticing detail yet it's specialized in detecting movement. Basically you get a whole extra sensory input giving you all the details of how the car is moving compared to the ground, together with how you are moving through the environment. This is ofcourse also a big reason for motion sickness as your visual cortex tells you you are moving, while your body says, nu uh, you're sitting on the couch. Once you get used to that, you have this extra wealth of information available, which for example makes drifting 10 times easier. Not only do you get a better sense of speed, you also have much better feel of how the car is situated on the road and whether it's starting to understeer or oversteer. It can be a bit overwhelming the first time though, DC is pretty high on the vomit list for first time users :)
