I also posted this in another thread, so sorry for the repost, but it's just too good. People need to watch this.

I just needed to rewatch this. Dedication.

Yeah man. Did you watch all three? For some reason my MacBook doesn't display the Flash videos, even though I have enabled it for this site, hence why I've included those links.

Those vids just make one understand how much heart and personal experience goes into those games. As a car nerd and photographer myself, I find it extremely fascinating how Kaz manages to combine both those obsessions in his games. The emphasis on sound in GTS peaks my interest, since I'm an audio engineer as well...just fascinating how they work. It definitely makes one appreciate and understand why they take so long to make these games.

Haha I wish I was tbh, but no...my dad just had similar talents. Minus the racing license sadly.

Hmm.. Maybe you're right.

Occasionally, I just find myself longing for a better sense of speed in cockpit view. But maybe you're right that in real life we feel the sense of speed through sound and rumble (as in being physically in the car feeling the rumble) and not at all through a shaky view.

I believe you're right regarding VR offering a view with a far better sense of speed. I gotta try it soon.

Here's a gif I made of taking corners in DC VR, it just doesn't compare to driving on a screen.

Ofcourse in VR you get it in 120hz goodness, although blown up the detail is pretty poor.

Wow. That must be pretty damn cool.

Try it first hand, maybe in a sony store... but the graphics can be a little subpar.

I did some careful observations today while cycling (my favorite passtime) and I guess you're right too. My bike doesn't have suspension, tires at 80 psi, zero give, saddle is not build for comfort either every bump is felt. When I ride over a rumble strip while staring straight ahead, the horizon does jump in my visual field. So I guess in a race car with stiff suspension and a hard race seat, going 5 times as fast, bit of shakiness in your visual field is quite normal.
Ofcourse without staring straight ahead your brain interprets it as the car or you moving compared to the earth and horizon being the 2 big constants. Which is probably a big reason for sea sickness, messing with the fundamentals of visual processing.

VR gives you a better sense of speed as it makes use of your peripheral vision. Peripheral vision is not good at noticing detail yet it's specialized in detecting movement. Basically you get a whole extra sensory input giving you all the details of how the car is moving compared to the ground, together with how you are moving through the environment. This is ofcourse also a big reason for motion sickness as your visual cortex tells you you are moving, while your body says, nu uh, you're sitting on the couch. Once you get used to that, you have this extra wealth of information available, which for example makes drifting 10 times easier. Not only do you get a better sense of speed, you also have much better feel of how the car is situated on the road and whether it's starting to understeer or oversteer. It can be a bit overwhelming the first time though, DC is pretty high on the vomit list for first time users :)

Just two points. There is a difference of your body moving  with the car (everything bumping, and your head shaking somewhat) than only the camera... that is why you don't notice much when driving but notice terribly when watching something tapped from the hood.

Also if you go shotgun or driver your sensations will be quite different, the feedback from pedal and wheel is quite diffent from just passive.

I can read the cellphone while driving for hours to end but I get nauseated when reading in passenger after a few minutes.
