Forums - Gaming - Which "Mature" titles are actually immature?

This thread is why the current M rating sucks.

M does not mean a game is mature. M means you need to be mature to play the game.

And while Grand Theft Auto may be considered immature...you should be mature if you're playing a game that kills people, steals cars, has foul language and sexual themes, etc.

 QTF I totally agree.

Wait, why did you quote yourself...........is this some sort of an inside joke or something?

OT: Most M games are targeted towards teenagers, in my mind, who technically shouldn't be playing the game at all (but they'll get their hands on a copy anyways). Mindless killing can be fun for some people, not me particularly, but if they have fun, then the 40/50/60 dollars they spent would be worth every penny to them. However, as people get older, I think they tend to get away from games that are just about blood/guts/sex and try on focus on games that are much more than that (but they may still contain the blood/guts/sex).

Mature:

Bioshock, Half-life franchise, most good Survival-horror games, Eternal Darkness (good enough it needed to be separated from the others), System Shock, Call of Duty 4, etc. Any game that uses it's M rating to have mature themes and a deep fleshed-out plot.

As well as the tongue-in-cheek games that go so over-the-top it's humorous like Conker's Bad Furday and No More Heroes

Immature:

Pretty much everything else. Anything that substitutes blood and boobs for actual quality gameplay (God of War) or is filled with beefy testosterone-filled men to get teenage hormones going (Gears of War), and of course GTA...

It makes absolutely no sense to me that you would consider No More Heroes a "mature" game for the reason you gave when you don't consider GTA mature even though it has over-the-top tongue-in-cheek violence as well.  Nice slam to Gears of War with the "testosterone-filled men" comment as well, what exactly does that have to do with a game being considered "mature" or not?  Absolutely nothing judging by the fact that the same kinds of players play Call of Duty 4.  And God of War substitutes it's gameplay with blood and boobs?  Umm you mean the same game that critics have praised for it's.. well gameplay?

One thing I absolutely hate is the game ratings of both Super Smash Bros. Brawl (I'll give you a reason why) and Shadow the Hedgehog. I work at a daycare and when I used to go there as a child a few years ago (when I was 10), we got to play Super Smash Bros. on the N64. After I left, my sister was in the after-school classes. Melee rolled around and the daycare wouldn't allow them to play Melee due to the Teen rating. WTF, why would the game be rated Teen if it's just Comic Mischief and Cartoon Violence? Since I work at the daycare now, I've been trying to urge my bosses about letting the kids play SSB. They will not allow it due to it being rated Teen, but I gave them reasons. Now that Brawl has been released, I brought my Wii to demonstrate (they're going to get a Wii for the daycare, but no games except for Wii Sports, WTF >_>) and showed them Brawl. They said it wasn't too bad, but they still couldn't let the children in the school classes play it due to it being rated Teen. Well, that's not all. Several of the after school kids, including some pre-Kindergarten kids, own and brought the Brawl game case to show off (because they like the game). I pointed it out to my bosses and they will make the decision on it. What I REALLY don't understand is that if they did not allow Melee to be played, why the hell did they allow Shadow the Hedgehog to be played? That game is a bit more violent (gun usage and suggestive themes) and even has swearing in it (I know, big whoop), but the teachers ALLOW the kids to play and bring that game JUST BECAUSE it's rated E +10 up.

this is a really dumb and annoying thread. It isn't the first time i have seen a bunch of gamers try to make there gaming tastes and then somehow intellect and personality superior to other gamers. M is just a rating like an r movie. Should all r movies have to use there content to be more serious, obviously not with everyone loving movies like saw and american pie (i think there both r anyways)

how can u call epic, rockstar, and team ninja lazy when they are known to be perfectionist, but there games have mature content

it sound like u are trying to dis gta by saying it becomes popular mostly because it is violent and not a fun innovative game. while the violence helps it wouldn't make the franchise so popular

Plus i think games should try to have a deeper meaning than just fun, games like bioshock and assassins creed, but since we dont see a lot of games like that and there isn't a huge demand for it why should all m games have to fit that criteria

also i like some of the games u guys are saying GOW a sony franchise with one of the greatest storylines and plot twists in gaming history, but not devil may cry or no more heroes( especially this one where u just kill for fun)

and i guess 5 years ago me and my freinds were 13 and loved gta 3 and onimusha and, we also liked sonic and mario just not as fun so i guess that makes as one of those little kids who just played games like gta and dissed mario because it wasn't violent like your talking about. I don't no where u got that idea that every kid is like that. also complaints like this are what some people say about the whole gaming community as a whole so i am surprised u say that even if u are talking about kids

Also in the end the truth of human nature is there is something very exiting about violence and competing. u just cant get the same excitement from jak and daxter or portal

Do you seriously believe what you jsut said?  Rockstar is far from perfectionist by any means.

Then GoW has one of the most predictable stories ever made, it's on par with a lot of game stories but not what would be considdered amazing.

@maxwell that is why just about every game reviewer praised it for its story and huge twist that comes close to the end where we learn about kratos past. You probably are just making this up without even playing the game and knowing about the story your opinion has no value

Just wanted to throw a shout-out to the following titles for being both M-rated and mature (and awesome):

Shadow Hearts
Shin Megami Tensei (series)
Dreamfall
Indigo Prophecy
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth

Hates Nomura.

Tagged: GooseGaws - <--- Has better taste in games than you.

Conker's Bad Fur Day, but i liked it because of that

@Dante
Obviously you've never read a book that has a better plot then God of War thats set in the same theme, therefore your opinion has no value.

I think Gears got an M on the chainsaw kills alone..

It also had a fair amount of swearing in-game. The chainsaws absolutely guaranteed an M rating, though.

Which is perfectly okay with me. Chainsaw kills are probably the most rewarding aspect of the game, especially in multiplayer.

I agree. To me the chainsaw kills are what make gears so awesome. If anybody hasnt said it yet duke nukem.
