Forums - Nintendo - For the Wii's sake, the PS2 must be discontinued this year

Another way to look at it, is all of the PS2 ports the Wii is getting wouldn't exist at all if it weren't for the PS2.

There might be no:

Rockband Wii
Baroque
Guitar Hero 3
Alone in the Dark
Ghostbusters Wii
Starwars: The Force Unleashed Wii

or many other games if it wasn't for the PS2 sticking around for a little while longer than we all expected.

It's not certain that these games would even be ported to a lower graphical standard if there wasn't more than one system for them to be ported to.

Don't listen to the anti-Wii talking points. The PS2 brings more games to the Wii, that it takes exclusivity away from the Wii. I say, let it go on forever, cause that just means more quality Wii ports.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Like others have said the laziest devs like Conspiracy would still put out crap.

That said some porting issues would go away like the whole RB debacle with it being such a rushed port that it doesn't work with the GH Wii controller or have online like GH Wii.

But it would be a very stupid decision for Sony to kill the PS2 now. First off the vast majority of the PS2 user base haven't upgraded yet and forcing them to upgrade by killing off the ports and cheap sequels before the PS3 is at a mass market price would be tantamount to sending out ads for the Wii. Also they've cut the costs for the PS3 quite nicely but having the PS2 profit help the bottom line is essential as just a few months ago Kaz wasn't even sure they could be profitable off of the PS3 alone by April '09.

And that's not even considering the fact that Sony probably recognizes the fact that PS2 longevity could hurt the Wii in exclusive software support.

Edit: an interesting point Zen.  Many of those titles could be debated though like GH which is even coming out for DS so I doubt it would skip the Wii regardless of a PS2 version to port from.

Let them flail. It's entirely their fault if they take the lazy route of just porting PS2 games, and don't make Wii games that truly take advantage of the Wii's capabilities. And their game sales will usually reflect this accordingly. Any developer dim enough to believe that a game tanking on the Wii is the fault of the Wii needs to reasses what kind of game they're making. Plenty of games aren't tanking, and those are almost all the ones that have more than "afterthought" status for any Wii-specific controls.

Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

Games that arent developed properly should fail, just no one would buy such crap. But if it's a good port then its another history. Anyways wii versions of games shouldnt get ported from PS2 since they suck.

Guitar Hero 3 Wii is not a PS2 port.  To many people (me included) it is the best version of GH3.  Of all those games, only Rockband seems like a PS2 port and there is added content.

Of course, you might have been joking :)

Well regardless of whether or not you think it is the "best version" (implying that it's a cheap port), GH is a port. The PC, PS3, and 360 version all look different in loading screens, animations, and fonts. The Wii version is the PS2 version with online play (Don't think PS2 has online play at least but i'm not sure).

Here is something to think about:

Wii is keeping PS2 alive, while PS2 is slowly killing Wii

Discuss.

Didn't Soriku make a thread just like this?

And in the end I say that you're selfish.

Ps2 isn't killing anything. The wii is still going strong despite the ps2 ports.

The Wii version has the best guitar.  The PC and PS2 versions have the worst guitars, the PS3 had guitar problems (not always working), and the Wii had sound issues. If you said the Wii version was similar to the PS2 version but had online, the best guitar, and may have DLC added later, than you would have a reasonable point.  I am glad I have the version of GH3 with the most fun guitar.
