I meant before Diablo... At least I never played anything like it before then. Since the two games have released, there have been a few imitators. From what I have heard, not very good ones.

Eh, there've been a good number of imitators really. Nox, Titan Quest, and Hellgate London to name a few off the top of my head.

I wanted to play Hellgate London but don't have a PC up and running yet. Do you recommend it?

No, definitely not. Titan Quest is pretty good though.

I don't really like Titan's Quest.  I actually have it (and Immortal Throne) installed on my PC atm but I got bored part way through it.  It's like it's trying to be the new Diablo 2 yet... its skills are far less exciting than D2's.  I'd rather play Diablo 2 again or Dungeon Siege 2 than TQ.

this game looks pretty good

The disparity of the opinions in this thread is pretty funny when you look at it:

Fallout fans: Bethesda sucks, I hate Oblivion, they're going to ruin my favorite RPG series.

Everybody else: Yay, Fallout! Shiny! Looks nice!

That's not funny.  That's sad.  They don't even realize what they may be losing.

Welcome to the world of getting older. People like Michael Bay movies, too. I stopped trying to give a shit a long time ago.

I'm more worried about what we will be getting, instead of what we may or may not lose.

And yes, I'm probably in the "Kill Bethesda" - camp.

Fallout 3 is made by a whole different developer who's already basically admitted to having no intention of keeping with the style of the first 2 games.

Meh. I miss the original base categories (RPG, Adventure, Action...etc). Diablo 2 is a hack'n'slash Action game IMO. The entire story is nothing but an excuse to motivate the player to go out, kill enemies, take their stuff...etc.

I also detest the idea that a level-up system is synonymous with RPG. To me that makes absolutely no sense. When did Role-Playing Game suddenly come to mean a Level-Up Game?

Going back to my original point, you have real Role-Playing Games like Fallout 2 and Baldur's Gate 2 in the same sentence as a hack'n'slash game like Diablo 2. Seeing them lumped together is painful because they're completely different experiences.

RPG is a fairly broad genre, but yes, it's defined by a statistical character development. I mean, consider what defines an action game... Fighting things lol. There are a lot of very broad genres out there, and yes, RPG is one of the broad ones.

Sports games have stats systems that level up with expierence as well... if that's your main definer most sports games should be considered RPGS.  You can't base it off levels anymore because a good number of RPGs don't use a level up system anymore.

What i hate about WRPGs is that they often make use of the D20 hit system. Nothing annoys me more then throwing a knife square into someones chest only to do no damage... when I'm standing 2 feet away.

I think either accuracy should be left untouched and more skill = more damage. Or accuracy should happen in a real way. AKA if you roll low on your D20 your Bow shot goes far left, or your swing actually misses... etc.

@naznatips,

ARf ...

but, at least, they kept the post-apocalyptic world.

still sound interesting since I never played Fallout1/2 ^^
