It really depends, usually right away unless I can't find one.

Nintendo still doomed?
Feel free to add me on 3DS or Switch! (PM me if you do ^-^)

Some consoles I decide to hold off for their entire lifecycle, like the Xbox. Now I'm buying great original Xbox games that are backwards compatible for a few dollars. Just the other day I picked up Full Spectrum Warrior for 3.99 and the Sega GT 2002/Jet Set Radio Future pack-in game for 0.99, both at Gamestop. Sometimes it's really worth it for your wallet to hold off a few years until a lot of the games are dirt cheap. I'm trying to build up a nice GC, PS2 and Xbox collection that I can keep for whenever I get the itch to play for a small percentage of the price they would have been in their original launch windows.
Hmm, the SNES is the first one I remember "getting" and that was about 6 months after it was released.
N64 about 1 month after release,
PSX about two years after release,
PS2 and Gamecube I got towards the end of their gen (I was too busy when they first came out),
Wii about 6 or 7 months after it was out
And I may get a PS3 sometime next year depending on price and if it's actually got any games I want by then.

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.

I'll always wait for the first price drop: usually longer. I want to see a budget line-up of games for this generation before I invest in one of the consoles.

Mostly because I got The Legend of Zelda: Adventures of Link as my first game (along with the duck hunt bundle), and I've bought pretty much every one since. |
In most cases that causes people to shy away from Nintendo, not embrace them.

Or check out my new webcomic: http://selfcentent.com/
I usually try to wait a year after launch to buy a console. I don't like to buy products when they first come out. The wait allows me to see if their are any major flaws in the hardware design and an indication of the consoles capabilities. But in general I buy one when I want one. :)
