It's clear the blu ray is not going to take over anytime soon. I predict some new format not yet out will take over probably around 2012 prior to blu ray gaining 50% market share.

Its not that clear,  there has been some talk about starting to phase out DVD production for movies.  Also there really isnt any new format that will be commercially ready by 2012.  Blu-ray will probably have close to 50% marketshare by the end of 2011.

End of 2011 isn't anytime soon.

And when I say new format around 2012, that is to say it will be released then, not that it will gain wide spread adoption then...

with support from what movie studio's an what consumer electronic manuf. ?

because all of the largest CE companies and even many smaller CE companies that make optical disc player's have decided to produce Blu-Ray,

Digital Downloads are mainly for rental, not to keep and the limit on the bandwidth cap in some areas have already gone through.

so which new format are you going to say is going to be released between now an the near future that all of a sudden the main companies that make DVD's , that make DVD player's that make Movies for those technologies are all of a sudden going to drop the Blu-Ray format over the new format when they already invested billion's into the format that already is a step above DVD.

first it was:

HD DVD

than DVD upscalar's

than Digital Download's

Now Toshiba's has stated all those thing's themselves now what does Toshiba produce?

that's right Blu-Ray

the sooner people face it that its over with and done with the better!

Blu-ray is the winner, and the vast majority of the companies are all on board now.

Couldnt of said it better myself.  No Optical Media is going to take off without full support of all major movie studios.   And I doubt Sony Pictures, one of the biggest in the world, is going to back another optical media option.

Maybe if nothing better comes along by the end 2012, then Blu Ray will eventually take over. Time will tell...

IMO, it's not a big enough improvement over DVD (and has some minor disadvantages in terms of price) that most of the consumers don't really want it, or don't care. Maybe the industry can force it, but that still takes time.

Digital Download is the only one of the above that would have any potential of outnumbering DVD/Blu Ray, and I don't see that happening by the end of 2012.

You are giving Blu Ray just twelve months to overturn DVD.

Good luck with that !

Last figures I saw put Worldwide Blu Ray sales at approx 5 percent of total Worldwide DVD sales

They've been getting a lot of >10% weeks and I can see them getting 20% weeks for the next month. Blu-ray more than doubled in 08 from 07 and more than doubled 09 from 08. Now with the recession subsiding and people buying luxary items again along with the continued momentum of the Ps3 BRD will have a massive 2010. Especially since I'm calling it now. BR exclusives next year. Worse case scenario... It'll be at 40%

While I enjoy your optimism since I am a huge Blu-ray supporter, I think the best case scenario for the end of 2010 is 40% marketshare.  Considering that its best month is 15% market share, for the monthly marketshare to be up near 40% by the end of 2010 would be fantastic.  But when that happens you will see a huge push from movie studios to get DVD phased out.

I wish the numbers for this week came out,  I was certain Star Trek would have pushed Blu-ray to its first 20% marketshare week.  But no numbers have been released to my knowledge.  The latest digital magazine numbers were for YTD numbers.

Well, I think 2010 will have a faster adoption rate then '09. HDTVs are becoming real affordable (Sub 500 for 32in+) and people are starting to spend money again. I believe with faster TV adoption in 10 than in '09 then blu-ray will benifit with it along the normal increase.

BTW - Target deal: 40 something in 1080p Vizio TV and Blu-ray player plus 2 HDMi cables for 700 dollars.

BTW - I thought Spiderman 4 was set for a summer of 2010. Looks like it wont come till 2011. darn. I could have seen that movie being the first real BR exclusive.

It probably will have a faster adoption rate, but the YTD marketshare is only 10%, with the best month at 15%.   So an increase to a monthly 40% marketshare is an increase of 167%.  Which would be exactly the nubers they would be looking for.

As for your other comment,  You wont see a huge blockbuster like that become exclusive to Blu-ray until it hits at least 40%.   Next year we may start to see alot of timed exclusives,  Like the Blu-ray releasing 2-4 weeks before the DVD.    Thats already happened on a small scale this year.  That will probably be its biggest help other than the price of movies staying in the $20 range.

I'm talking about 40% towards the end of the year... not 40% for the entire year...
