Forums - Sales - Blu-rays sale percentage tracking

*DVD sales down 5.21% to $115.29m
*Blu-ray sales up 7.12% to $8.42m
*DVD 88%/Blu-ray 12%

Do not understand it. BR has 12% of disc sales but only 7% (8.5 / 115+8.5)  of  revenue? A BluRay disc costs much more than a DVD so how can this be true?

Maybe it has to do with Box sets / TV shows.  It would be considered 1 unit sold but its usually 4 or so discs and thus costs much more.

Yay for breaking into double digits! I wonder when Blu-Ray will beat DVD for the first week? Might not be until 2010 or 2011, but good to see it is making progress.

And for people like me who refuse to buy DVD's because they are way too easy to pirate, Blu-Ray is the only way the movie studios are going to make money off me in the home video market. I do love going to the movie theater though...

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Because it had 12% of unit sales from the Top 20, but only 7% of revenue from total sales. All of the Top 20 movies are probably available on DVD and Bluray, but outside of the Top 20 there will be lots of movies that are only available on DVD. Basically Blu-ray sales outside of the Top 20 will be far lower than 12%.

Anyway, big spike for BD this week, but it probably won't sustain sales at that level for a while yet. It will be interesting to see how BD will do this holiday season.

revenue has stated between 7 and 9 million dollars and the top 20 has been holding at 7% for a while. If that increases any bit farther like the last bit of data then Blu-ray will show that it is stronger then one would have originally thought in the US market.

Not really. Blu-ray has been in Japan since 2003.

It's 5 years into it's life cycle overthere.
