Shovel Knight and Shantae are joining Blaster Master Zero as a new playable EX character, Inti Creates revealed at Anime Expo today.

Shantae will be available between July 6 and July 19 for free. Shovel Knight will follow between August 5 and August 16. After these periods, the characters will cost $1.99 / €1.99.

Welp, glad I ended up choosing not to buy this game.

Their implementation looks very nicely done. Awesome. I think this sort of community effort by these indie games will help their culture more than hurt it.

Not really interested in this game but I think it's very nice to have the DLC be free for a while before becoming paid, especially since you don't even have to own the game to redeem them on the eShop.

Gotta admit, I tried playing SK too but I found the whole Souls-like aspect of having to recover your loot after a death more frustrating than enjoyable. I dunno, game didn't sit well with me but still. Having more character models is never a bad thing.
