Forums - Nintendo - Rumor: Ubisoft having some trouble bringing Steep to Switch

Wouldn't be surprised if it was cancelled or released as a mess. it had trouble running on PS4.

Interesting. So is this game just poorly optimized all around?

I played it on PS4 Pro, it uses an unlocked framerate, hitting 60 almost never and it sometimes dropped below 30. I believe it's locked to 30 on the orginal PS4.

There's clear reasons for the bad frame-rate, for example the games map is literally just a camera looking at the entire open-world, you can zoom into the mountain and see other players. The advanced snow deformation that accurately reacts to player animations won't help either.

I don't know if I'd say it's badly optimized for what it's doing, just that what it's trying to do was difficult for the Jaguar CPU, much less the Switch.

Around the Network

So, it sounds like Nintendo's helping them port it to ensure that it gets a release. Is this normal for the console manufacturers to do? Or is this a special case?

Perhaps that just means Nintendo are actually serious about wanting 3rd party content on their system. But then again, Nintendo are being very buddy buddy with Ubisoft as of late anyways.

Yeah, they seem to be very close with them, especially recently.

Interesting. Thanks for the clarification.

It does seem like games this generation are more concerned with crazy features like "snow deformation" rather than a game just running well. Does any of this really enhance the game? I miss the days where we didn't have to worry about frame rates.

You should take a look at Arms. And if you become selective and say "oh, you can also play it without motion controls". Yeah, that's true, but then it loses one of its main points (it was made to be more precise/fast than having to use analogs and it also has that curve effect that makes a difference). By that logic everything can run on PC, because in the vast majority of games you can remove important features and still have it playable. But then they are not the same and lose purpose. Some people do care about those differences/features.

Really? Pretending there aren't readily available motion controls for PC and PS4 that are a lot more accurate to boot? PC certainly isn't the gaming platform that is missing features.

And if ARMS is the only example people can come up with then I guess my point stands.

You are missing the point. The main unique concept of ARMS wouldn't work as well on the Ps4, move or no move. End of story. Sorry if this sounds like a slur on your console of choice but sometimes you just have to accept reality.
