Forums - Gaming - When did the retro-era end/modern-era start in gaming for you?

I'd consider the 5th gen when the modern era started and consider it retro before that.

For me, the modern era started in the 6th generation.

I'd say the switch to 3D. So, the N64, Saturn, PS era I consider to be modern. Prior to that, I'd call retro.

This.

I consider ps1/n64 retro now, ps3/360 onwards modern... don't ask me about ps2.

Everything with a cartridge is retro, everything with anything else is not. Obviously Switch, DS, 3DS and Vita also use carts, but those are still different to me as they're not encased in big hunks of plastic.

Old retro: gen 1-4
New retro (old modern): gen 5-6
Modern: gen 7-8/9

1985

I've decided the cut off is between Pacman and Ms. Pacman.

I consider retro gaming to be from the start of video games like Pong to ending with the systems that came out 2 generations prior to whatever is the current one at the time.
