I'm a huge fan of Capcom games since the SNES times. They even made an awesome game out of Aladdin. Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Megaman: all amazing franchises that helped define gaming culture. For this I am very thankful.
However, Capcom is rapidly drifting away from me, and I'm certainly not alone in this.
In present times, most Capcom games have been slowly and painfully murdered by Capcom itself. Yes, this is worded quite dramatically, but that's exactly the way Capcom has handled their franchises.
- Megaman? Dead.
- Street Fighter? Hanging by a thread because of unfinished games and shady deals. Street Fighter V has lost Capcom so much money it isn't even funny.
- Breath of Fire has been reduced to a mobile game of questionable quality.
- Devil May Cry is doing okay. But does it have a future?
- Resident Evil 7 is a great game and is doing alright. May be Capcom's saving grace for now.
- Monster Hunter. Now this is a hot topic with Capcom first ditching Sony for a deal with Nintendo, and now doing the same vice versa. Personally I'm really excited for Monster Hunter World, but all signs are pointing to a steep decline of the franchise with leaving handheld users (including the entirety of Japan) in the cold.
One could write a book about Capcom's business antics. They are kind of like the Yakuza of Japansese gaming nowadays. They live by shady deals, liquidating games left and right, making enemies everywhere and seemingly not giving a fuck while doing it.
In the meantime, however, Capcom is in heavy financial trouble. Monster Hunter is one of the few franchises that is making them a substantial amount of money, and they are taking a huge risk by alienating a large chunk of their fanbase. By switching around and proving to be loyal to no one, many gamers have grown to heavily dislike the company.
So, the question stands: what does Capcom have left? What is Monster Hunter World fails to break through, leaving their one succesful franchise in the gutter? Will Monster Hunter be the final victim of Capcom's bizarre policies? And if so, will Capcom still be around in the next 5-10 years?
I hope they can turn things around. A man can dream, right?
