Spider-Man gameplay focus is on ‘innovation’ as ‘full-on 4K’ confirmed

In an interview with Mark Cerny, we learn more about the stunning Spider-Man gameplay at E3 2017, and get confirmation of full-on 4K support.

It’s the day following on from Sony’s E3 press conference and we’ve gotten a little more insight into the Spider-Man gameplay trailer that headlined the event mere hours ago.

In an interview with PlayStation’s Sid Shuman during the pre-conference show, PS4 Pro system architect Mark Cerny had this to say regarding developer Insomniac Games’ take on the Spider-Man universe.

‘’I don’t want to diminish in any way what they’re doing for the Pro, it’s great, but their number one focus is on gameplay innovation within the Spider-Man universe. For example, how does Spider-Man fight? Certainly with his incredible speed, and agility, and of course his webs. There is the potential for a whole different style of combat than you’ve ever seen before’’, said Cerny.

Also speaking on PS4 Pro enhancements, Cerny continued: ''They’re using [Insomniac Games] a forward-looking technique called ‘temporal injection’ that lets them efficiently support 4K displays. The display buffers they’re using are 2160p, so it’s full-on 4K, and they can then scale down those buffers to create very clean and high-quality graphics for 1080p HD TV owners.’’

Of course, following on from the interview we laid witness to a frankly stunning looking Spider-Man gameplay trailer that certainly reinforced the gameplay innovation ideas that Cerny put forward.

Featuring a gorgeously realized New York, the trailer had Spider-Man putting the stop to some illicit dealings but not before being dragged halfway across the city hitting into nearly everything possible. If anything, it really displayed how dynamic the destruction is and indeed how fluid Spider-Man seems to control.

And despite rumors to the contrary, the 9-minute gameplay trailer also confirmed that Spider-Man’s release date is set for 2018, following the trend set by the likes of God of War which will release early next year.

As ever, stay tuned to PSU all through E3 week for the latest and great news in PlayStation.

Can't wait to play it. Though, the QTE better be few and far between.

Honestly, I have yet to see more gameplays from this game, but I don't really see any innovation right here. Getting tons of Arkham vibes.

Which is not such a big deal, because today innovation is hard to achieve. Game looks solid and promising.

Too be fair the game will use temporal injection like Ratchet & Clank does. So it's a 4K framebuffer and it looks really really close to native 4K, but it isn't quite native 4K.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.
