When the biggest thing in your entire conference was a Spiderman game you should be ashamed or worried at least.
PS4 sales are healthy; Switch is invigorating the market; MS is pushing tech. It may evolve more over the next decade than we've become accustomed to, but the industry will be fine. Had Switch not entered it could have been a different story though.
Been in trouble since 1983. But there's no more trouble than there was a decade ago, I'd say there's even less. The industry has branched out and become huge and now consists of several different segments with various degrees of profit margin possibilities, developers have more than one leg to stand on now if the going gets tough and there have been less bankruptcy and overall closing of studios in the 8th gen than in the 7th (which is largely due to the financial crisis, of course).
Gaming is in good health, it's just rather boring at the moment.
Yes, gaming is in serious trouble. So much trouble that there is no word other than serious to describe it.
In other news, water is no longer wet. Also, the sky is falling. To top that off, the ground is rising. We are literally at the end times here.
It's absolutely not. Nintendo has a good head start and Sony's gaming division is the most successful part of their company. Microsoft is not investing in first or third party exclusives like they used to but their crossplay feature might increase their gaming revenue at the expense of their console sales. They're still selling though.
If OP's measure of how safe or how much "in trouble" video games are is new IP announced at E3 then consider this. Most new IPs are usually announced at the first honeymoon years of the generation even years before their release period. We're probably in the middle of this generation and some of those games are not even out yet Like Kingdom Hearts 3 and Death Stranding. We'll get new IPs announcements but not at the rate of last year or the year before.
