I came here to say that the golden age of fighting games happened during that era. :P
The 90s were gold for fighting games.
Mortal Kombat 2, Killer Instinct, Soul Caliber, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Street Fighter III Third Strike, Virtua Fighter 3, Tekken 2-3...
Man, the late 90s must have been the something else then. Anywho, I feel those 3 down the bottom might be dead. SC especially.
I wonder if a new fighter can actually break into the market, what we are getting now is the same established few plus licenced games. Could a new fighter appear? BlazBlue is essentially the last one to succeed.
EDIT: Ha, 2 people said it already about the 90s.
Hmm, pie.
The 90s had so many great fighting games, that I still haven't come close to playing them all!! The 2D and 3D fighting games of the times were great.
I would also classify the 90s as the Golden Age. Right now we have a wonderful resurgence though. I stepped away from fighters for a while - Killer Instinct Gold was the last one I gave serious time to - and am glad to find myself grabbing more of them again now.
Yep. 90s
Now is not the Golden Age, it's the Recycling Age, or the Age of Lazy Sequels

I'd go 1994-1999.
Super Street Fighter II/Turbo
SoulCalibur
The Last Blade
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Samurai Shodown II
etc.
Guys agreed, 90s had a ton more, I remember that I have a yuuge library of fighting games on the Saturn, a few imports that people here never heard of.
However 90s isnt the first Golden Age because of quantity, it had the best fighting game of all time: Tekken 3.

I would like to come here and mention the 90s.
Thank you.

You spelled Killer Instinct Gold wrong.
