Forums - Microsoft - XBOX SCORPIO YOU MUST CALL XBOX 10 S

This is good really.
It means that MS finally has a real plan for the Xbox brand. They will use it to push their UWP. It's a lot better then just trying to copy Sony's plan.

UWP is about to beat the living shit out of steam.

Kodi would be a really big deal and it still looks like its coming, UWP is a really good thing for xbox owners so much capability out of the box and everything is optional so use what you need but its unlike anything we have had so far on console(s). Really good stuff.

Unstable? They just managed to squeeze another gig of ram out of the OS and reserve it for developers.

If it was unstable on the Scorpio, this simply wouldn't be possible.

What has ram got to do with stability?

If they can take away resources from running the OS, surely that means something.

Oh God, 360 to 1 to 10? They should probably just stick to names instead of numbers...

They should have just gone the Sony rout. Xbox, Xbox 2, Xbox 3... this new console should be Xbox 4.

In term of main console stability they should have made a big step anyway I qoute:

"Component-wise, Scorpio will feature a 2.5-inch 1 TB hard drive that offers a “50 per cent increase in bandwidth,” reports Digital Foundry."

by having every base harddrive in every scorpio performing better that should also increase system performance and stability. Also since the memory bus is much higher then any console has ever seen and the memory speed matches that of a base 1080gtx which is insane the fact they require less ram because of the speed of both the HDD and memory isn't a big suprise.

Of course the Xbox One Scorpio wouldn't need to run teh background apps that make up the largest part of Windows terrible RAM managment, so they have that advantage, but unless they have a seperate update scheme for the Xbox, running Windows 10 S would make it a lesser console.

Can you name an OS that has superior memory management to windows?

Apple's OSX has been bonkers on that front since Lion... Maverick pushed compression to make up for it.
In my opinion Windows is actually pretty decent these days, especially considering how well it runs on Bay Trail devices with a paltry 2GB of memory.

The fact that Microsoft is running multiple OS's on Xbox and can do everything the PS4's OS can do like downloading in the background... And still use the same/less memory is a testament to Microsoft's software engineering.

Chris Plante goes further and asserts that the console could use Windows 10 S as an operating system with the aim of spreading the Windows ecosystem to as many homes as possible and offering consumers a truly compatible Media Center obviously with games And multimedia applications of all kinds.

Xbox One is already using the Windows 10 Kernel though.
Windows 10 S still uses the Windows 10 Kernel AFAIK.

That's gonna look a lot like Xbox IOS

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Linux, FreeBSD and anything based on XNU really.

Especially XNU's memory managment is far surperior to Microsoft's, being able to run from a desktop to a watch without much problem and without RAM spikes that go up to 9GB's while no applications are visably open.

Microsft is at it again with their numbering scheme! this should be the xbox 3 4K or xbox 3 elite (like their elite controller).

Can't say I have ever seen Windows spike memory usage up to 9GB in my 20 years of WIndows usage. Right now Windows is using 4GB with 5GB cached out of 32GB.

Windows and *Nix based OS's are vastly different in how they handle memory anyway, so they aren't directly comparable.

For instance, *Nix based OS's like Android, Chrome OS etc' will use all the available Ram to cache as much data as possible... The bonus of that is everything always feels quick and snappy.
But if you are working with 10+ Gigabytes large data sets, it can take time to free that memory up and flush it to disk.

Plus if you are working with say... A Web Browser with a crap ton of tabs... And you start to get low on memory, the OS will start to unload tabs, which means you have to reload the pages that get unloaded later. Not exactly always ideal.

Windows on the other hand will just let you keep on going... As it will just page the data to disk once memory is full... And with SSD's as fast as they are these days, it's not necessary to unload tabs.

There are pro's and cons to each approach... And it's really dependent on what you want out of the system. But Windows 10 isn't the same as the terrible Vista or 9x OS's. Could it be better? Shit yes. There is always room for improvement. Same goes for *Nix.

...I miss BEOS. That was a solid OS.
