I saw this rant over at neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=239571407
| Finale Fireworker said: I've had three 3DS systems since launch and owned every version of the system. I have spent hundreds of hours playing numerous 3DS games that remained my lifeline to Nintendo content during an era where I was similarly disenchanted with the Wii U. If not for the 3DS, my relationship with Nintendo would have taken a six year hiatus. I am grateful for the opportunities it has provided me. That said, since day one, I have fucking hated this sorry excuse for hardware. It is a hideous and insulting follow-up to its innovative predecessor. Since the day I brought my launch 3DS home with Ocarina of Time 3D, I knew I was in for a terrible tenure of compromise and disappointment. The 3DS is the worst piece of hardware I have ever had the immense displeasure of using. Even as refinements have improved the material problems with the system, the technology itself has remained pitiful and disgusting. As time goes on, I am confident that absolutely no catalog of games will age as poorly as the Nintendo 3DS. This is easy to assume because, even today, the system can't touch even the least aspirational PSP games in visual fidelity or sound quality. I cannot wait for this foul system to die. I cannot wait to leave it behind. I hate it with my life. The six years I've spent with it have felt like internment. It has been a grueling necessity so that I could enjoy games that are done an immense disservice by the machine that envelopes them. Kill the 3DS. This system sucks. It was terrible at launch. It is even more terrible today. I have seen pedometers with more compelling technology than this sorry system. It is a public high school production of Hamlet: cheap, amateur, and reductive to all the material. So, you ask where all this 3DS hate came from. For me, it's always been there. The 3DS has always been ruining terrific games and forcing me to lower my expectations of what portable gaming could be. I feel no different today than I did in 2012. The only difference is now there is the Switch. If God was merciful, this transition would be swift and aggressive. But God is dead. There is no God. The transition will be slow. It will take years. By the time the transition is complete, and the 3DS is dead, I will be dead too. Just me, the 3DS, and God. |
And, to me it is quite interesting how someone could so much dislike a piece of hardware, but still buy a console multiple times, because the exclusive games were just so exceedingly compelling to play.
Technically, enjoying a game, while simultaneously hating the hardware being used to enjoy it.
I myself had the DS/PSP/3DS/Vita.
After the first few years of DS, I got so burnt out on looking up, and down, and up, and down on dual screens and taking my hand off buttons to use a touch screen on the DS.
Relatively, It was disruptive compared to how much I enjoyed playing on the GBA SP with a more cohesive single screen single experience, with my hands comfortably in a single position rather than tapping around a screen.
I ended up jumping ship to the PSP for the most part, and bought physical Vita games for a few years before giving up since Sony starved that platform to a cruel state of anemic subsistence.
And even then, with my firm self aware preference of platform and type of game experience, even I bought dozens of DS and 3DS games because they were simply that good.
And, I would feel myself wishing that these games were on PSP or Vita because of the form of the hardware itself.
Obviously, Nintendo Switch is such a relief, haha! :P
Anyone else have experience with this?
