There are a couple reasons why Nintendo saw a turnaround.

1) The cheap price of the wii compared to the other systems.
2) wii sports
3) The failure of the Gamecube, owners wanted to upgrade faster then the Playstation owners.
4) A lot of Luck.

It's not luck, it's skill in development and marketing, unless you mean lucky that the PS3 and 360 sold for 599 US dollars, in which case, Nintendo was lucky because of that stupid business decision by its competition.

Its luck, no one could of imagined the wii would of took off like this. Nintendo never even thought it would sell like this. Nintendo also has some of the worst ads i have ever seen. You have a bunch of people jumping around acting retarded infront of their TV. Thats even worse then the Sony ads.

I hail those adds as the most successful ad campaign in videogame history.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Nintendo turned around because of Iwata's vision, and maybe because Microsoft interferred with the industry. If Microsoft wasn't there to challenge Sony in to making a super-powerful console, with a super-high launch price, and huge development costs, PS3 would've been a lot less ambitious, and maybe, just maybe, would've been a REAL competitor to Nintendo's Wii.
In that case, we would be having a SNES-Genesis like console war now, I think. Maybe it would be called: Nintendo's revolt against the Playstation monopoly, in hypothetical gaming history books.

Dude, have you ever seen this Sony commercial they've been showing in Europe?

They may have had a bit of luck, since in the end any innovative product needs a bit of luck to become a success.

However, no one can deny that Nintendo did focus on what's important to turn around in the console business - they made an affordable console which can be easily and cheaply developed for, and focused on improving the controls to make the console attractive to many people.

Of course, Microsoft and especially Sony also helped by making a console which goes against what a mass market product is.

Because Nintendo delivered a product that contains what Reggie promised at E3 2006:

More fun for less money.

Yes, Reggie is awesome. His E3 speeches are always fantastic, and usually the highlight of the event, imo.

I felt worse for the Ridge Racceeerrr!!!! guy than I did for Suda at the Japanese launch of No More Heroes.

Nothing is as bad as Sony ads...

Honestly, I've never seen a company screw up advertisement so bad in my life.  Just downright awful.  The reason Wii ads sell is they show 2 things 1) People having fun and 2) People actually playing the game with in-game footage.

Yep.  The first time I saw it I was watching Cartoon Network with my 5 year old cousin.  She started crying.

Griffin, if you haven't noticed, the majority of people like to act like retards in the comfort of their own homes.

Anyway, it was the right product at the right time with the right name (as soon as I heard Wii, I knew Nintendo had won).

You do not have the right to never be offended.

- Nintendo "got help" from Sony and MS
-broadened the user base by focusing on 'new' way to play games

The NES, SNES, N64 and GC all started at $199
The Wii is $249

The PS1 and PS2 started at $299
The PS3 started at $499/599

Sony made a big mistake with the PS3 pricing !!!!!!
They tried to cram technology and blue-ray into a gaming console.
This next holiday season if/when HD/blue-ray pick up, then their market
share will increase, but there is no way they can catch up to the Wii.

Consoles LTD, end 2009, end 2010 - prediction

Wii -  68 million, 90 million - Wii HD in late 2011 - $249

360 - 38 million, 47 million - 720 in late 2010 - $299

PS3 - 31 million, 43 million - slim PS3 in mid 2009 - $299
