New Final Fantasy remakes hinted at by FF12 HD director

Looks there could be even more Final Fantasy remakes on the way as the FFXII director suggests that remasters on the other hand would be tricky.

Square Enix could potentially churn out more Final Fantasy remakes from the PlayStation One era following the release of the upcoming PS4 remaster of Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age later this year.

Speaking during an interview with IBTimes UK, FF12 HD’s director, Takashi Katano, suggested that additional projects would likely take the form of a remake rather than a remaster, due to hardware the original titles were released on. This opens up the possibility of a Final Fantasy 6, 8 or 9 remaster at some point down the line.

"[Final Fantasy 12] is a PS2 title, and you look at the other titles in the series and technologically anything before the PS2 era is going to be quite difficult to do a modern remaster of to a suitable level of quality," Katano-san commented. "That means [a future game] is far more likely to be a remake."

Square Enix is no stranger to remastering its Final Fantasy back catalogue, with Final Fantasy X and X-2 also receiving a fresh lick of paint on the PS3, PS Vita, and PS4. The Japanese software giant also applied the same process to Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, which arrived on Sony’s flagship home console earlier this year.

In addition to the above, Square has also re-released the earlier Final Fantasy titles for various platforms over the years, including a full 3D remake of Final Fantasy III for the Nintendo 3DS. The first two games were also remastered and launched on the PlayStation Portable in 2007, and have appeared on numerous other devices such as PC and mobiles to boot.

Of course, the studio is currently working on a full-fledged Final Fantasy 7 Remake for the PS4, which will be split into multiple releases in order to fully realise the iconic JRPG for a modern audience. While the game will adhere to the original 1997 game’s core story, there will be a number of improvements made to the remake, including a more action-oriented combat system and brand new areas

Stay tuned for more on potential Final Fantasy remakes at PSU as we get it.

Final Fantasy V remake!! I want one sooooo bad.

"I've Underestimated the Horse Power from Mario Kart 8, I'll Never Doubt the WiiU's Engine Again"

Square did Final Fantasy III and IV for DS, not 3DS. There are no FF remakes on 3DS, despite Square commenting around 2011/12 that we might see remakes of V and VI on that system.

I'd love a remake of VI on Switch. However, I am cautious about that. VI is truly enormous in scale, it's Shakespearian in some senses, so if they've had to do an episodic version of VII, then they would have to do the same with VI in all likelihood.

I'd settle for a decent re-release of the original that isn't limited to Wii's Virtual Console, too.

Do a FF11 remaster (the MMO).

Make it free-to-play, and stuff like Shihei bags / medicin / potions & powders can be "bought" from a store with currency (for those that dont want to grind & farm for it).

Or just make the current FF11 f2p.

I mean why bother coming up with new ideas when you can just make the games you've already made again. But remember, change the feel, style and look of it enough so it's not the same game.

Hmm, pie.

1) Bring the remaster of FFIX to PS4
2) REMAKE FFIX !!!!
3) REMAKE FFVIII !!!!
4) I can see them remaking Crisis Core FF7 since they can use pretty much the same thing as what they're using for FF7 remake.

I was about to say, I'd totally love more remasters. But remakes? Given the current state of VII Remake? No please, just leave the games like they are already.

A remake like FF IV for DS, though. Even if the chibi aspect required time to grow on you, it was basically nice. Barely altered anything over the original and preserved most dialogues intact, plus voice acting and the same good ol' gameplay with small tweaks here and there. That's the kind of remake (art style can be whatever they want) I'd like to have.

I'm getting kind of fed up with SE. They really need to start holding back announcements until they're closer to release.
