He claims to be inpartial, basically. That console wars are stupid, basically. I really have a hard time believing the article above. It's simple. If your console "peice of plastic" doesn't sell well then that console dies and no more games come to it. He knows this! Wii U is a recent example. He has to know with PS4, and Switch now, decimating Xbox 1 weekly. Can we really believe that he doesn't secretly hope that Scorpio slaughters the other 2 systems?

Or maybe he just hopes the Scorpio sells really well regardless of how the other two do?

He acts like a nice guy that just plays games and wants all companies and gamers to just pick whatever system they like... which mostly isn't his system that he is in charge of. If he really does think this way, then why hasn't MS replaced him with his non competitive attitude? I'm all for nice guys and getting along, but there is a console war and tough and aggressive decisions must be made.

What do you guys think?

Maybe because they're not too disappointed with the guy and his running of XBox?

Its because Microsoft is losing. Spencer is smart, he knows when to play passive to dismiss long conversations about their flaws. Humility makes it easy for people to overlook the true situation. With that said, hes not naive and hes working on the problem. We will see the fruits of his labor as boss come E3. If Spencer said theres no console war, then hes lying to the face of every consumer.  I think he is anti fanboyism.

This E3 is the last chance, if they don't show the Scorpio with decent number of exclusives then having them is simply not the future they believe in and the path they've chosen.

He already hinted they don't believe in singleplayer story driven games anymore so I'm afraid they have learned the wrong lessons again, that PS4 only won because it was more powerful. Power and 4K are gonna be the main themes at E3. They will likely use a good chunk, prolly half of of their E3 conference to boast about the specs, something that should've been reserved for a separate event like those used to announce the PS4, Xbone and PS4 Pro.

What he says is always 'circumstance appropriate'. It's almost as if there's a PR team gauging the market and telling him what to write ... But naaaaaaa.

The PS5 Exists.

First, the tweet he was responding to was really stupid.

Second, because you are in competition with someone doesn't mean you have to behave childishly. He's an adult. It would look far, far worse if he acted like a petty fanboy.

I have no idea why anyone would expect him to respond otherwise.

1. they are childs with cute anime avatars?

2.X1 is up year over year!

I'm sure he cares about how much his console sells. However, like any businessman, I am sure he is far more concerned about his margins and how much profit his products are bringing i

Gamers on this site and many others believe that theres a first place trophy for who comes 1st on sales. Its so stupid its funny.

Am I the only one who finds him disingenuous? He's trying way too hard to be the nice guy of the industry, with his console currently getting beat in sales and very little to show in the games department.

He wouldn't talk like this if Xbone was winning by 30 million and their 1st party was kicking Sony in the butt.

Less talk and more action please.

No. "Phil" had no childhood, no mother and father, no friends, and of course, no belly button. Can a form of arificial life hatched in a lab for a singular purpose be anything less? The answer, I believe, is yes. In fact while he might seem insincere due to this model's difficulty in mimicking more nuanced human personality traits , he is quite the opposite, since everything he says is all he's been progammed and conditioned to say.

- "If you have the heart of a true winner, you can always get more pissed off than some other asshole."

Man, the hards on this place gets for Papa Phil. Over-analyzing everything he says, I love it. Just wondering, what do people here think Miyamoto would say about the stuff Phil described? Users gleefully messaging him about how certain games reviewed poorly on a Nintendo platform. Would he enjoy a message from xXMasterCheefXx talking shit about how bad the last Star Fox reviewed? Or what if KR4TOS420 tweeted him a picture of 1-2-Switch's meta score with some shit talk included? I doubt he would find that healthy for the industry, or worthwhile to read. Same goes for anyone at Sony. If someone tweeted Shu talking shit about how bad The Order was, or how Drawn to Death is laughably bad, would he feel good about the person taking time out of their lives to gloat about the misfortune of others? I highly doubt it.

These are people who work for companies making lots of money and all are doing a good job at it. People like Spencer or Kaz, their role is simply to make money. That's it. They all want to sell the most consoles, but that doesn't mean you have to embrace the insanity of console warz.

Watch them attack PS4 Pro with all their power once Scorpio is unveiled on E3.

Same thing they did with Xbox One S only because they made it smaller with 4K Blu-Ray, while it was still weaker than PS4/PS4 Slim and much weaker than PS4 Pro.

No console wars ROFL.

Phil is a genius.

You either didn't read the article, or have no idea what console wars are. You're describing marketing. There is nothing wrong with Sony marketing the PS4 Pro's power, there's nothing wrong with MS marketing the UHD drive in the One S. And when the most powerful console ever launches this year, there's nothing wrong with MS marketing that. But none of this is console wars. Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony are in competition with another and will try to market their product as the best however they can. That's just business. This is something pathetic and sad, it's console warz.

I mean, who makes a twitter account to tweet negative things to someone just because they work for a different toy box than the one you enjoy using? #sad

Their new plan kind of kills the problem of " If your "piece of plastic" doesn't sell well then that console dies and no more games come to it"

They are ending the generation "reboot", that reboot happening every five/6 years,  and forces you to sell all your old games and consoles because they are now useless.

The problem with that, and why almost every new generation, a new company is leading the market , is that when every manufacturers tells you to throw away everything you bought during the last 6 years and start again from scratch with a new one, you can tell yourself "well, I might as well jump ship and buy another brand this time".

The alternative Microsoft is bringing with scorpio and the next Xbox consoles, is a way of retaining users. They tell you : " you can keep everything, you don't even have to buy a scorpio, we'll make sure scorpio games will be compatible with your old Xbox One. You can upgrade whenever you want for a new model, but nobody is forcing you".

They do all that, because the real money isn't in selling hardware, because those things are sold with an awful profit margin, ranging from tight to "at a loss", the real money is in games, digital content, Gold memberships, and so on.

So their new plan is to make sure you don't leave the Xbox/windows ecosystem,  for Phil Spencer, the console war and the "piece of plastic" VS "piece of plastic" is kind of irrelevant.

Because, if when the PS5 comes out, Sony says "you have to sell all your stuffs to buy new stuffs", basically Sony and their costumers are again back to square one. Microsoft meanwhile, with the scorpio or the next model, will just grow from the user base they started with the Xbox One..

Or it could just as well turn out that the Scorpio will get a pitch for an awesome new game that really cannot run on the X1 and Microsoft will allow it in fear of missing out on a new massive IP. Same for Sony. The PS5 will be backwards compatible from today's point of view, but if some developer comes up with something that really requires all of the new console's power, Sony might allow things on the PS5 that will not run on PS4 or even PS4P. Point being that both MS and Sony are exactly in the same boat, neither one is holier than the other in this regard and their future intentions will become clear only with time.

It doesn't work like that anymore, the reason why the gap in power between the PS3 and PS4 was far smaller than the gap between the PS2 and PS3,  ist the same reason games these days doesn't make a lot of progress in terms of gameplay

The gameplay is not bound by the hardware limitations anymore, we reached a plateau, where all they can do is make bigger open world, more sophisticated AI, more characters on the screen, but nothing forcing you to upgrade to a 6TF 12GB machine. Yes of course the Xbox One version will be scale down in terms of graphics and details, but that's it. What you'll have on scorpio is : VR, better framerate, better graphics (4K, effects, details).

Right now I can't even think of one game on PS4 or Xbox One that could not have been made on PS360. Think about it like this, if you take aside the graphics what gameplay innovations are so demanding in terms of power that it needs to be on a PS4 or a One? Response is none.

That's the main reason why Nintendo went for Hardware innovation instead of software. They realized that the only way to improve games anymore, was to make them bigger by throwing money at development. So they decided to put 2 screens with one being a touch screen, and that was the biggest change in terms of gameplay possibilities since the first 3D consoles.

To get back to xbox, yes the xbox one support will start to die some day, but it will be a smooth transition over 5 to 10 years, instead of being over 1 to 3 years like we have now. I'm not arguing here that the xbox one will receive plenty of games in 15 years, that would be ridiculous.

I agree with you.  Pretty sure he wasn't like this last gen.  Doubt he was like this during the XBO policy reveal, something I'm sure he played a role in. He's the one who most likely had the final say so in disrespecting Sony's exclusive advertising rights for two games.  Something I'm sure they'd sue over if it was done to them.  Or at least make a public threat of action.  And I'm sure it'll be all about teh warz once Scorpio hits.
