if i have 6 hours to burn and i want them to pass fast i can either watch films or play games. If i watch films the time doesn't fly and i don't enjoy myself as much as i do playing games. every long haul plane flight should have a ps4 on every seat to entertain their passengers. I understand that's very costly but in first class at least.

Ahh, so that's how the PS4 is truly going to take over? With every plane having multiple PS4s?

Why would movies even have a chance as such a limited medium?

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I see movies and games as very different things. A (good) movie is a form of expression of the author, while a (good) game, within the context created by the developer, should be a mean for the player to express himself.

Movies are better at being believable stories (when they're done well) than even the very best game can ever hope to be. No one plays GTA 5, BOTW, Metroid Prime or MGS 5 and believes what is happening. But a great movie? When it's really good, you get lost in it and start believing in what you're experiencing.

I think it's all due to the whole passive vs. interactive. We watch real humans act, so we relate. When we "game", we're all aware we're pushing buttons and making fake polygons move around.

For video game movie, I like CG movie.

I general, I would prefer playing the game rather than watching it, except maybe when it's anime vs VNs or something like that

Movies suck for the most part. It's all simple, popcorn, derivative crap. I think TV is blowing big budget movies out of the water lately.

I prefer video games more than anything. Nothing like getting totally immersed in characters and a story AND you actually CONTROL it all

That's only if you watch the typical Hollywood drivel. There's a lot of independent fare and foreign films that are straight up art. Even then, I think a lot of what Hollywood has to offer in terms of the blockbuster stuff is better than a lot of the things (not everything) we watched 20 years ago. Think about it. Batman Forever vs The Dark Knight. Star Wars: The Force Awakens vs The Prequels.

As for the OP, I say movies beats games. I think if a poll was up, I would be on the losing end, but I can guarantee you more people in the world agree. I loved games, but I feel that my interest goes up and down with them. However, I have never gotten tired of watching movies. The writing destroys most games (this side of something like GTA or The Last of Us), and most other aspects of production are way higher in film. The only thing games shine in is interactivity, and lately, a lot of them have been failing on that too, because they want to (badly) emulate film.

For film, I am a fan of just about everything but I will limit myself to drama and fantasy (even though I swear they aren't my favorite genres).

For drama: No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Chinatown, Network, Schindler's List, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, City of God, The Silence of the Lambs. I can keep going.

For Fantasy: Legend, The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, The Fountain, Pan's Labyrinth, Willow, The Princess Bride, The Neverending Story (the 80s friggin' ruled). And many more.

For games, I am partial to RPGs. I like several other genres more similar, but I will pick one for the sake of discussion.

For RPGs (action included): FFVI, FFIX, FFX, FFXI, FFXII, FFXIV (yes, I love Final Fantasy). Dark Cloud 2. Kindom Hearts 1 and 2. Bloodborne. Paper Mario.

For games that really impacted me but are out of genre: Ico (my favorite of all time), Shadow of The Colossus, The Last of Us, Cave Story, Super Mario World, Silent Hill 3

I will say that some of the most impactful games I have experience affected me more than some of my favorite films. But overall, I enjoy a lot more movies than I do games. Especially these days.

Great list of Fantasy.  Have you seen Stardust? One of the few newer movies that seems to capture that same charm as some of the greats from the 80's
