I opened the thread to see people downplaying everything. Not disappointed. Thanks

The FY numbers are encouraging, but the 500% increase in profit year over year is mostly due to accounting stuff. Popping the champagne would be premature.

well, Switch is here and is a sucess. Of course anything can happen, for all we know Nintendo would stop selling hardware tomorrow. But for now is safe to, at least, buy some beer and waiting

Obviously selling the seatle mariners was a big factor but still decent results.

So without selling the baseball team and pokemon go, it's down yoy by 10.7%?

It's unfair to not include pokemon go in the overall figure even if they didn't really do anything, but it's fair to say that obviously wont be replicated this year.

So why does the document say that the operating profit is $263M?

Because of one-time deals like selling the baseball team that are not part of operating profit

Man, some of you guys get riled up over everything...

The profits are good, but we can't just ignore where they come from. They sold a baseball team, and they had huge profits in the summer from Pokemon go, which have largely tappered off.

Neither of those sources will be around in a meaningful way for the next fiscal year. So anyone claiming that this is some big comeback needs to remember that these were one off events and that they dont reflect Nintendo's actual business of selling games and hardware.

But please, feel free to call me a hater because you'd rather remain blissfully ignorant of the reality of the situation.

This has been well discussed.

There is plenty to be optimistic over still though.

A vast majority of sales still came from their dedicated gaming devices.

Pokemon Go is mentioned just once in the earnings release, and it is about how it generated demand for Pokemon Sun and Moon and the 3DS platform in geneneral.

Pokemon Go and the NES Classic reacquainting people with the Nintendo brand is something that can generate repeatable success.

The Switch did well.

Nintendo is optimistic about Switch's future, forecasting 10m units for the upcoming fiscal year.

And none of it will be invested in creating new IPs, creating new studios, investing into western development or create partnership with western third parties.

Yeah...

Why the salt?

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Guess what, this year they have the Switch, it is a succes, the past year they did not have the switch, so be prepared for nintendo like profits next fiscal year too.

34 years playing games.

Still got a pretty good return on investment from the 125 million purchase of 50% stake in 92 to getting 661 million selling 40% stake of their 50 leaving them with still 10% in Mariners.  That 10% stake will be worth more than their initial investment.

I'd be very surpsied if they reach $900 million again this fiscal year. Even with pokemon go half of this was down to selling a baseball team.

But hey we'll see.

Not if you factor in inflation but yeah still a great investment
