Do you have a link to this? I'm reasonably confident Sakurai has never openly declared a favorite game in the series.
(unless this is just sarcasm and I'm missing it)
O/T: I wouldn't be necessarily against it, but I don't think I'd care for it either, at least not without a significant patch to fix some of Melee's horrendously broken stuff and make more than 10 or so characters viable. And I suspect that trying to balance Melee after nearly 15 years would probably just anger the community and result in them sticking to the original. I'd rather Nintendo work on a definitive edition of Smash 4; there are some much easier to implement changes there that would be far better received by the Smash 4 community.
Maybe just port Melee to the eShop, like Slowenberg said above. Dedicating resources to polishing it seems like a waste of effort.
