Hmm must be a catholic thing.

I'm Syrian Orthodox Jacobite Christian (Saint Thomas Christian - a group of Christians from India).

We do lent for 40 days but nothing about giving up something.

I gave up Soda, Coffee, junk food, etc years ago though but not because of religious reasons but for personal/health reasons xD.

I consider it more of a personal betterment challenge, even if it's always been rooted in my family's religion. I have a Lutheran friend who does it too, so I wasn't sure how common it was. Probably varies from region to region.

No Soda or coffee though? @.@ Im honestly jealous. I get splitting headaches if I don't have some caffeine before 10am.

I think it's a Catholic (or maybe all Christian) thing. We pick something to give up (abstain/sacrifice) for the 40 day period leading up to Easter. Usually I'll give up some kind of bad habit, though for the past four years I've given up pop/soda, since I drink way too much of it.

And that lunch looks delicious.

I live in a Catholic country, but I've never heard of this. We just eat a bit less and more simple (at least, we're supposed to. Nobody actually does it.)

But probably it is an actual Catholic tradition, and it just got lost here. Most people don't go to church either (even on Easter), unless they're like 70 years old.

Interesting...never bothered looking it up, but maybe this isn't really a thing outside the US.

We also are supposed to abstain from red meat and poultry on Fridays during Lent, but a lot of Catholics here don't really follow that. I can kinda see why...I've known Jewish, Muslim, and Ethiopian Orthodox people during college and work, and so Catholic sacrifice always seemed like a joke in comparison to some of their traditions :P

Happy Easter everyone! I did what I normally do for Easter: I visited my maternal grandfather, who lives in a small city about 30 minutes away from me. I didn't socialize as much as I should have, though, because I was studying for exams.
