7M is just too low compared to 5.5M from last year.

PS3 is a cheaper console, selling REALLY better in europe/US, with some big games that will soon be released (GTA4/MGS4?), HD DVD is dead, and a 50$ price cut later this year is possible.

It sounds about right referring to Others and the US totals.

Currently the PS3 has sold (roughly) 9.5 Million units in the North American and "Total Others" markets, for them to sell 16.5 Million in the North American and European markets they would need to sell at least 7 Million units by the end of 2008; between March 31st and December 31st of 2007 the PS3 sold 5.5 Million units in the North American and "Total Others" markets.

Pachter is talking about Europe and North America and is ignoring Japan (he may or may not be including other regions). The fact that several posters are bashing his prediction and calling him an idiot without reading and understanding what he is saying says a lot about them; many of these posters are claiming that the PS3 will have sold at least 20 Million units of hardware without realizing that would mean that Sony would need to sell more PS3 systems in 9 months than they have sold in (nearly) 18 Months in North America and 12 months in Europe.

The way its looking Im kinda ind doubt about his European prophecy. Im not sure if he's actually observing the european market or just throwing out random numbers onto the table.

but majority of 360's sales figures will probably come from the US, GOW2 and GTA4 will probably move ALOT of consoles there.

But I believe it will be oppesite in Europe. The european support will probably push the PS3 hardware on western territory while the EU 360 numbers wont have much to say compared to its main region; the US.

Either way this year will have interesting results by the end of the year.

I want to point something out that people seem to forget all to easily:

-The week ending before the PS3 launched in Nov '06 was the closest the PS3 has been to catching the X360 ...EVER.

-The week before PS3 launched it was 5,207,486 behind the X360, after launch week it was 5,289,779 behind.

-Today the PS3 is  6,629,183 behind the X360, it was actually closer throughout most of the summer last year (2007).

-The farthest the PS3 has been from the X360 was 7,366,299 for the week ending Nov 3rd 2007. 

The PS3 is absolutely making up ground but its still trying to win back what it has lost from launch. I realize that a measured analytical approach isn't quite as much fun and all but you might be surprised at all of the interesting things you notice.

I  think the PS3 will pass the 360, I don't think it has a chance in hell of doing it this year but it most likely will eventually.  But some of you are way ahead of yourselves in this celebration of a comeback.  The PS3 is merely on the road to a comeback and has a long ways to go to complete it still.

trends show a PS3 outselling WW the Xbox360 since (dec/jan/fev/march) about 4 months despite the Xbox360 beng cheaper than the PS3.

This is also observed in NA where the PS3 is selling about the same amount of console than the Xbox360.

Trends is good for the PS3 and I dont see why this will change.
PS3 should be able to come back and match Xbox360 WW sales in 2009.
