I wouldve taken a mediocre pepperoni pizza over MN9 tbh

[3DS] Winter Playtimes [Wii U]
I love a good mix of Western and Japanese developers. Phil was just a jerk to begin with.
Sooooo should we thank Phil Fish? He done awoke the sleeping... Godzilla.
So happy that man left the industry lol

This can go both ways, tho. |
Yeah Mighty No 9. Most AAA western stuff is pretty trash tho and at best mediocre. Pretty visuals but bad mechanics but if it's made to be more "cinimatic" (a bullshit term to cover bad game mechanics and bad frame rate) all is forgiven in reviews often. Yes as long as it;s big name Japanese can get away with a lot as well like FFXV a bunch of missing story and characters and a shitty combat system a big vacant boring world. FFXIII games are putrid but were forgiven because FF. Still the point is lately the best games coming out recently are mad ein Japan.

There are exceptions of course but roughly speaking I agree with you. And my biggest complaint about them isn't even the microtransactions and season passes. It seems like the majority of Western AAA games nowadays are built around MMO-like structures and I really find them boring and soulless. If we make Western developers know how much quality decline we think their games have seen, maybe that'll motivate them to improve just like the Japanese developers were motivated by the criticism
OT: Shout-out to Capcom as well. Like Sega, they still struggle a bit but I really enjoyed Resident Evil 7. RESIDENT EVIL 7: BIOHAZARD

The west for the last two gens was ahead in terms of technology and had a better grasp on the PC infrastructure of gaming. But now that the Japanese are catching up the creative blocks that Western studios run into are showing more and more.
Lube Me Up
The Japanese game development industry has never really died...it's just been dormant because they take a lot of time to create their AAA games. Zelda, Persona, Nier, etc. those games can't be yearly refreshes. So we get the idea that just because Japan isn't pushing out yearly iterations in huge franchises, it isn't as big as the western industry which is wrong, but for the wrong reasons.
"Japanese games are bad" or "Western games are bad" always comes cross as ignorant generalizations to me, usually with the person proclaiming such using their own tastes as some kind of universal metric. It's even worse when they cherry-pick their examples.
That being said, some of the bigger Japanese publishers definitely needed a kick in the rear. Some of them became content with low standard sequels that were really just rehashes of what they'd done before or games that were all style and no substance.
Some of the big western publishers could use some of that same medicine, too, of course, especially with franchises that get new additions every year.

Japan vs Western (+ Russian games) ?
It's unfair and fictional comparsion.
