They won't, if Switch does that well they'll stick to the same approach or similiar, they changed after the Wii because they foolishly went against their views of doing their own thing and actually listened to people about trying to appeal to the so called core players when these people themselves never took into account a number of factors.
abandoning a unfied ecosystem would such a backwards step, i hope going forward they dont do that

If Switch is a success or decent success they'll simply just continue with iterative model versions.
If Switch doesn't meet expectations, then I think they'll continue to make cheap portable machines, but will concede to Sony/MS and allow some Nintendo games to be made for those platforms while expanding more into iOS/Android and push things like their character properties hard in the movie business.
There will never be distinct console/handheld ever again, they wouldn't be able to supply enough software for two systems like that even if they wanted to (a PS5 tier console and a PS4 tier portable? Forget it).

They seem to have a pattern of releasing at least one "sequel" to a new concept first - so next will probably just be a more powerful version of Switch with maybe a few extra features and better screen quality- especially if Switch is successful. Then they'll release something completely different. What that is is anyone's guess.. I've envisioned this idea for awhile now of a console that can project its image on any flat surface that you can interact with via motion sensing.. A sort of semi-hologram/VR solution. You heard it here first!

Normally I'd say a new console with a completely different idea from the previous one, like Nintendo does most of the time, but after the Switch I'm expecting them to go the "Switch 2" direction. So I'm basically expecting a new iteration of the Switch that fixes the shortcomings of the original, but also builds on top of it (Especially the versatility aspect - We already have TV/Portable/Tabletop Mode, so a VR Mode is a no-brainer once the tech has evolved enough to become mainstream - and by that I mean affordable).

Something more about you. Something more utopian. Something like... Switch... Switch U.
Switch's lane will need to be expanded (a hybrid would be the best way to solidify their position) but the next home console should be Virtual Reality.
