Forums - Sony - What if the PS4k wasn't the Pro, and is still in development?

There's no point of the PS4 pro to exsist. The people who want more power, would ignore the pro, and skip to ps4k. That's where the canblizing would start. Than people would be acustom for the middle upgrade, to be abandoned fast. So people would wait it out. Causing sales issues, and brand hate. This is what happened to Street Fighter.

Just no..... you just need to stop thinking that everyone wantsthe most powerful hardware on the market and just that. Its just not how it works.

In reality there are customers for every tier of hardware spec out there; and an even harsher reality is that the cheaper your hardware is the more customers it will appeal to.

If sony had a $200, $300, $400 and $500 console, they will all sell. Those that care about power a lot and want the best the Playstation ecosystem has to offer will opt for the $500 box. Those that couldn't care less would opt for the $200 one. Those in between will opt for the $300/$400 models. Either way SONY is happy cause at the end of the day they are all buying PS4s.

The bolded part is the most important thing in all this. People seem to think that power is all anyone cares about when it comes to consoles. It just isn't. When people buy a console it being the most powerful console is probably not in the top 2/3 reasons they buy it. They buy it firstly for the games, secondly for the games they can only get on it and then for the amunt of their friends that have the same console. Then you can start looking at things like power and features.

Someone that is willing to spend no more than $200 on a console, will not suddenly not buy the $200 console because their is a $400 version of the same console out there. Thats just not how it works.

I'm not trying to say it's crappy.

But when a device has a larger base power consumption, then the efficiency curve will be different.
Most decent PSU's are at their most efficient at around about 50-60% load.... At a set temperature.

So if you had a device that consumes 100w of power, then a 200w PSU should be the sweet spot.
But if your device consumes 50w of power than a 100w PSU could be the sweet spot... So even though power consumption is only 50w different, the PSU is 100w different.

Sony would have more intimate knowledge about the Playstation 4's power consumption and PSU efficiency than I would and would have accounted for all that.

Regardless... If Sony was to release another console, chances are it will use a new PSU anyway.

Correct.

What I found was past consoles, especially PS4's, seemed to fall into the 55%-65% range. A 275w PSU at 65% power usage is 180w while gaming. It's totally possible that PS wanted closer to 50% and went with 310w to make that happen. It's also possible they have another peripheral for Pro only that will require a 310w PSU.

Pro has a 310w PSU for some reason, and is surely justified for whatever reason they had. There could be more than just one answer as to why.

Good points.

PS1   - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.

PS2  - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.

PS3   - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.

PS4   - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.

PRO  -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.

PS5   - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.

PRO  -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.
