Looking at Monster hunter sales on the PSP and the sales boost to hardware in Japan, do you guys think we will see something similar happen on the Wii?

I am a Gauntlet Adventurer.

I strive to improve my living conditions by hoarding gold, food, and sometimes keys and potions. I love adventure, fighting, and particularly winning - especially when there's a prize at stake. I occasionally get lost inside buildings and can't find the exit. I need food badly. What Video Game Character Are You?

I think so. Naysayers like to proclaim that monster hunter is only successful on PSP, but really there isn't much to compare it to. The wii version will be the first console monster hunter to follow the success of Monster Hunter 2. It will have online and be built with the success of the PSP versions in mind. I think Monster Hunter 3 will be a huge success in Japan.

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.

It's possible. It all depends on what its online feature is.

Half-assed like SSBB, you are looking at 3 million. At its potential, it can do twice that (in Japan alone, since we know it will barely break a million elsewhere)

with almost non-online play, it won't break 2 million.

Soriku (Feb 10/08): In 5 years the PS3/360 will be dead.

GoW2 ( expect 7 - 9 million entire life and over 2 mill first day), Fable 2 (expect 5-6 million entire life and 1.5 mill fist day) BK3 (expect 4 - 5 mill sales entire life and 1 mill first day).. Tales/IU/TLR should get to 2 or 3 million! post id: 868878
Episode 2:
Letsdance: FFXIII (PS3+360) first week in NA = 286K
According to pre-order rate in week 13 (post id: 2902544)

The Monster Hunter series has grown to an extent that it can not be stopped. Sales may be lower than the PSP version, but it will still be an easy million seller.

I think that sales of the PSP and Wii indicate that a lot of people in Japan have both, and I doubt fans of the series would mind making the transition to another console.

A sales spike? Monster Hunter is one of the biggest franchises in Japan, so definitely. Can't say how big, though, since the market there is crazily unpredictable.

I heard something like online co-op. I never played a monster hunter game before so I might pick up the psp one to see what it's like.

I don't think it will do awesome like the PSP version.

My reason is that they've had three opportunities to play it on the PS2, those three offerings have sold less than the first one on the PSP.

I think it sells well because it's a portable version of a great game.

Didn't Monster Hunter 2 have online?

I'm going to do a "the Source" for my Japan preview

Lifetime sales

Low end 500k
High end 1mil
Sales 750k

Well, the PSP really does shine with Monster Hunter sales... just look at the PS2 sales in comparison:

EDIT2: Remove sales table since it screwed up the topic :(

As you can see the PS2 sales did suck in comparison but I think the Wii will do better than the PS2, maybe not as well as PSP though

EDIT: ROFL, the table is too large for the post... oh well, here is the link http://vgchartz.com/games/index.php?name=monster+hunter&console=&publisher=&genre=&keyword=&order=Sales

Exactly. Everyone says only the handhelds ones are successful, but if you look at the first week sales of the original PSP version, it actually started off weaker than the ps2 games.

It slowly caught on, and eventually developed a huge fanbase. The Wii version will be just as big, if not bigger.
