I mean there will always be contradictions to an overall trend, and I'm sure there were very good writers back then just as there are terrible writers now. But the major outlets have improved their performance, and produce much better, deeper critique. The death of magazine writers coincided with the rise of video reviews, and if you haven't seen any GameTrailers/EasyAllies reviews, you're missing out on some the best in the business.

The video reviews are just readings of the written reviews though, I guess they have more vested interest in making the review good because of this however, I'd like greg miller to read that dead space review.

Oh I mean back then the video reviews were even worse. Basically just mumbled overviews of the poorly written reviews. Nowadays I think the video scripts are just word for word readings of the written reviews, so there's probably a greater emphasis on giving reviews proper flow and brevity. I really think IGN has much better reviews now than they used to.

I think if anything the standards of quality have taken a big dip since a lot of the Traditional Publications were shuttered off. No doubt the best reviews IMO in both a written and presentation sense goes to Easy Allies (GameTrailers). Brandon Jones' voice is Golden.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

Well said. Game journalism has certainly improved over the years, but, you're right, it's still a far cry from the richness of film criticism.

Stuff like this IGN review reads more like a fan post on GameFAQs than the work of a professional critic.

No, it has not. The reviews in many magizines were expertely written and far above what is being produced today, reviews seem rushed and I fear some reviewer don't even complete the games anymore.

I largely agree.  Back in the day of print gaming magazines, the review quality, on average, was much better than it is today.

The Internet has really beaten the quality out of all written journalism.  Everybody's a writer now, regardless of having any particular skill in the field.

I might be wrong but I highly doubt anyone on IGN (or any major gaming website for that matter) are "real" journalist. They are either journalists wanna be or very low quality ones, like sensationalist in the public media.

Gaming journalism has a loooooong way to go to become even remotely good, but hey crap stuff sells so I'm not getting my hopes up.
