Forums - Gaming - BOTW/Horizon Game Physics

I came across these videos on youtube which i thought were interesting, a comparison of in game physics between the two games.

Horizon looks stunningly beautiful but Breath Of The Wild is also beautiful all be it in a more animated way, it seems though with Breath Of The Wild you can interact with your environment more, games developers take note, this is how an open world should be done. There also seems to be something to see or do in Breath Of The Wid, i cant speak for Horizon as ive not played it, what do you guys think?

As much as I would love to have this topic remain open as it really does show Botw polish. The last topic like this got locked in a hurry. :(

I've played both. They aren't really similar experiences at all.

To be fair, the op was pretty aggressive and went about it the wrong way. If this op goes about it the right way, hopefully it will stay open.

OT: Yea its quite interesting the two different experiences that Zelda and horizon gives you.

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

Then again, Horizon is running a much higher density of PP effects, much higher degree of high res textures, longer draw distance, advanced lighting systems and HDR, higher resolutions native and a lot more dynamic effects through foliage and more dense population of denizens requiring more advanced AI threading, so it's not quite that simple.
Zelda sports a more stylized and less hardware demanding visual and rendering core, which makes rendering more interaction and physical effects easier, so it's a fairly useless comparison.

Take Minecraft, for example, you can build more less anything in it, but accomplishing the same in a more advanced engine with much more advanced effects would be tough to pull off without being murder on the hardware.

What is this about?

Are you just trying to pit them against each other? Trying to start a fanboy battle, or something?

Both games are great. Horizon is like Tomb Raider meets the Witcher and BotW is more like Zelda meets Minecraft.

Not at all, where in my opening post did i say Horizon was not a great game? No i didnt, i even stated ive not played it so i cant speak on it!

I just thought the videos were interesting in an open world enviroment and comparison of environment and physics, no need to be so aggressive.

Man... BOTW is such a masterpiece. I almost can't believe that it's running on a "tablet". I can't wait to play it! 8D

BotW does clearly have a more dynamic world, but it's hard to take this comparison seriously. They are by design very different types of open world games, so focusing on whether game B does the same as game A (but not the reverse) is going achieve fairly predictable results. If Horizon wanted you to be able to hit a tree down, you'd be able too. It's not like the engine can't handle it, larger robots often smash through trees on their way too you. The player being able too just isn't relevant to the game's goals.

BotW is arguably much more successful in achieving its goals, but its goals are ultimately still very different. If we made a video focusing on Minecraft's mechanics, it'd be pretty easy to make BotW seem mechanically static. It'd also be a dumb comparison, because they arn't trying to do the same thing.

The only reason people compare Horizon and BotW is because they're both exclusive open-world games releasing close together. Outside of that they have very little in common. Horizon is more like Tomb Raider than Zelda :p

lets see..... in a world like horizon, and how horizon is presented.... do you think it would look "ok/believable" to have her whack a three twice and it falls to the ground? Whack it again and it becomes a bundle of logs? Jump off a cliff and hovers using her scarf or something she magically pulls out of her pouch? Walk to a hill and just start climbing it?

Point is, there are very different kinda games, and their presentation adheres to their differences. If you or anyone can't understand that then I don't know what to say.
