I tend to avoid any reviews or anything when there's a game I know I want. Yes, BotW has blown away my expectations but I didn't let reviews over-hype them. Haven't seen a review yet, actually.

Games that delivered? For me,
-Valkyria Chronicles
-Super Mario Galaxy
-Resident Evil 4
-Metal Gear Solid
-TloZ Ocarina of Time
-(surprisingly) Resident Evil 7
-Starfox 64

There's a few more but that's a start.

I don't know if the Last of Us had immense hype but there was certainly immense pressure from Naughty Dog coming off Uncharted 2 and 3. Also, GTAV. Many people were cautious of the three main lead approach but it panned out perfectly.

It had the hype. I think it closed out E3 two years in a row!

I'd say Final Fantasy X. Everyone was super hyped about it because it was going to be the PS2's first Final Fantasy and it was going to have voices for the first time, etc. And it delivered!

Resident Evil 2 comes to mind...

Oh, and Super Mario Bros. 3. Probably the biggest of all.

The four times I can recall being seriously hyped (to the point of sleep deprivation) were for... Spore, Mass Effect 3, LoZ Skyward Sword, and Fallout 4. All four I own collectors editions for, and all four left me very very disappointed. I'm wary of getting too hyped these days, and new IPs especially always have to prove themselves first.

I am getting worried that my hype for Mass Effect Andromeda and Persona 5 are getting out of hand though... maybe I never really learned my lesson.
